Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway has given an update on her husband Derek Draper’s health following his battle with coronavirus.
The 52-year-old former lobbyist has been in hospital for 10 weeks after initially contracting Covid-19.
During Monday’s instalment of Loose Women, the stars of the ITV daytime show sent their well wishes to their pal Kate, who had previously given an interview with her pals Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh on Good Morning Britain.
Loose Women host Andrea McLean said: “We want to start today by sending all of our love to our dear friend Kate Garraway and her husband Derek, who is in a critical condition in hospital due to coronavirus, and has been in a coma for ten weeks now.”
She added that co-star Jane Moore had been to see Kate, and Jane said she had spent a “few hours” with her in the garden for a socially distanced interview.
Journalist Jane said: “We’ve always known that Kate is strong and an amazing woman, but I honestly don’t know how she’s still standing.
“Derek contracted coronavirus, he went to hospital, it looked initially like he might have a Boris Johnson experience, and come out largely unscathed, but it’s attacked all his vital organs.
“He’s now Covid free, they’ve brought him out of the coma, they put him into an induced coma and brought him out of the coma, and he’s not regained consciousness yet.”
She added: “So every day she is living with this awful uncertainty, she’s now talking about maybe our normality is that they are never going to know if he will recover.”
Fellow star Denise Welsh said Kate seemed to be coping by going into journalistic mode, and Jane agreed explaining that former I’m A Celeb contestant Kate, 53, was researching everything and taking support from her children Darcy and Billy.
Jane added that Kate said she would never judge anyone for breaking coronavirus lockdown rules, but she would say “you don’t where this virus is going to go in your body, and what it’s going to do to you.”
During her GMB interview, Kate admitted: “Derek’s situation is incredibly rare.
“The damage he’s sustained and we don’t know the affect on his body and if he can recover and how he would recover.
“Some of the damage he’s got, he’s only one in five people they’ve seen with it.”
Kate also revealed the heartbreaking final phone call she had with Derek before medics placed him into a coma.
She said: “He said I love you, I’m sorry I have to leave you.
“He said you saved my life, he thought I had pushed for the coma but then he said it wasn’t just that it was the marriage and the kids.”
Kate added: “He is still with us. He has fought the battle.
“I hate the idea of a battle but it is a battle… the fact he is still here and is holding on.”
Derek, who married Kate in 2005, was taken to hospital on March 30, where he tested positive for coronavirus.
The couple have two children Darcy, 14, and ten-year-old Billy.
