COVID-19 has been mutating as fast as it has been spreading, and new symptoms and diseases are being discovered all the time.
Dr Michael Koster, infectious diseases expert at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island, spoken about the two related illnesses.
Kawasaki disease has been found in children who contracted coronavirus
It can be a serious illness as it can cause coronary artery damage, and has been linked to viruses.
The other disease is similar to Toxic Shock Syndrome.

On Kawasaki disease, Koster said that not much is known about the virus, and knowing the symptoms is essential.
He said: “Fever for five days is a necessary part of the definition then along with that comes conjunctivitis or inflamed eyes, a rash, some changes in your mucosis, strawberry tongue, but you could also have very cracked lips and also a swollen lymph node usually just on one side of the neck.
“Most kids with Kawasaki disease that I’ve ever treated are often treated on the regular general care floors so they typically do very well, respond quite nicely to treatment.”
Doctors in New York City are reporting is that more than a dozen kids have developed this inflammatory disease in the midst of a coronavirus diagnosis.
The toxic shock style disease has been appearing weeks after an initial coronavirus diagnosis in children, and may possibly be caused by an overreaction of the immune system.
But Dr Koster said that there is no particular cause for concern so land as treatment is received early.
He said: “It’s not that an alarm is being sounded, this is still very rare – we’re talking about maybe less than 100 kids in total at this point across the globe and all of the kids who are not currently hospitalized, have recovered.
“I think an over-arching message that I would send is it’s safe to come to the hospital if you’re sick.
“Just to give you a sense of how many kids at Hasbro Children’s Hospital have COVID-19, it’s one.
“That person isolated and on appropriate precautions.”

It was originally believed that children were less likely to contract COVID-19, as at first it presented a major risk to the elderly and medically at risk people.
But last week, a Chinese and US study revealed new analysis showing that children were just as likely to get infected with coronavirus as adults.
This research suggests children are equally susceptible to the virus, even if they do not display symptoms as often.
The study was published just as the education secretary hinted that a phased reopening of schools may be one of the early measures taken as the government considers lifting the lockdown.
