However, it appears what has sparked the latest problems is Security Intelligence 1.313.1638.0 which was an automatic Windows update.
The bug stops Windows 10 users from running scans with Defender, which could in turn open Microsoft customers up to security risks and bugs. Which, when so many of us are relying on our computers to carry out our work, is far from ideal.
Windows 10 users have taken to Microsoft forums as well as Reddit to report the problems they’ve faced with Defender.
On Reddit one Windows 10 user posted: “Updated Windows last night before I went to bed. Today I find that Windows Security has stopped working. Immediately scanned with Malwarebytes, no threats found.
“Trying to restart Windows Security just gets stuck in an error loop. Relieved to hear others are having this issue, although it certainly isn’t ideal. Hope Microsoft delivers a fix soon.”
While another wrote: “It breaks the scan after like 27,000 files… then it shows this ‘threat service stopped working’ line. Super annoying, because the Defender stops working and you have to manually restart it. If you leave your PC unattended, the virus scan will run automatically in the background and it will break without any anti-virus running.”
