Lockdown to end? George Eustice gives key hint about Boris’ Sunday announcement

Boris Johnson is set to update the UK on the next plans for the nationwide coronavirus lockdown this Sunday. Leading the Government’s daily briefing, Environment Secretary George Eustice provided insight into what could be expected. However, he also warned that there would be no “dramatic overnight changes”.

Mr Eustice told briefing: “He’s going to set out effectively a roadmap of how we can evolve the current restrictions we have.

“From this complete lockdown at the moment to something where certain activities may become possible in the short-term.

“Other things might take much longer.

“We have to be realistic that there isn’t going to be any dramatic overnight change.”

He continued: “We will be very very cautious as we loosen the restrictions we have.

“As the data we’re outlining on a daily basis shows, we are not out of the woods.

“There are still major challenges with this virus.

“We will be living with this virus for sometime to come.”

The Environment Secretary added: “It’s therefore important to avoid that second wave that could overwhelm our NHS.

“We must exit and evolve these restrictions very very carefully.

“We work very closely with all of the devolved administrations.”

Mr Eustice continued: “They attend the COBRA meetings where some of these matters are discussed.

“As far as possible, each devolved administration has got the freedom to have slightly approaches.

“We are all working together to try to have a broadly similar UK approach.”

The Prime Minister is expected to deliver the address to the nation at 7pm on Sunday.

He is expected to set out how he intends to “unlock the various parts of the UK economy”.
