London panic: Armed police rush to Farringdon after man 'threatens to blow up building'

Firefighters rushed to Farringdon Lane following reports of a fire in a flat. But London Fire Brigade later said after assessing the situation no fire was found. The Brigade said it is “now a police led incident”. Witnesses took to social media to say they were evacuated from a building. They said they could see armed police at the scene.

One local said: “The police are trying to get him out but he’s threatening to blow up the building.”

Another person added: “He’s got aerosols or something, he’s got knives, and he’s threatening the armed police officer so they decided to evacuate just to make everyone safe.”

People can be seen gathered on a pavement in Clerkenwell Close peering through railings into a garden.

At least five armed police can be seen in a video shot by a witness.

Police can be seen moving bins around the side of the building and a blue screen has been erected which obscures bypassers’ view of the area.

The London Fire Brigade tweeted: “We were initially called to reports of a fire, on investigation that was not the case. It is now a police led incident.”

The Brigade sent six fire engines and 40 firefighters to the scene after the alarm was raised shortly after 3pm.

A spokesman for LFB said: “There was no fire but there was a person in there threatening to cause a fire.”

Vehicles from the Met’s Territorial Support Group (TSG), which specialises in public order policing, can also be seen in the video.

In a statement, the Met said: “Police were called at 15:11hrs on Tuesday, 11 August to reports of a disturbance and possible fire at a residential address on the Peabody Estate on Farringdon Road, EC1.

“The London Fire Brigade attended and were threatened by the occupant.
