Officers from Bedfordshire Police confirmed two lorry drivers have died in the horror crash today. The identities of the drivers are not yet known. The crash happened southbound in Milton Keynes.
Photos of the scene show the trailer of one of the vehicles hanging over a barrier after it was thrown into an embankment.
The early morning smash happened between junctions 13 and 12.
It caused major tailbacks for traffic in the area.
Police closed both carriageways while they dealt with the incident.
Highways England issued a warning to drivers to stay away from the area.
It said the motorway was not expected to return to normal until midnight tonight.
Highways England tweeted: “M1 southbound J13 to J12, both carriageways remain closed and will do so for some time. Traffic is currently flowing well on the approach to both closures.”
