Traffic on the M25 clockwise is also being held for the air ambulance to land. The major motorway has been closed seen about 5.30am this morning and major traffic delays can be expected this morning. A crane and road sweeper are believed to have collided.
Emergency services including Kent police are in attendance.
Highways England said at 7.12am the clockwise carriageway at J4 will also be closed “due to the severity of the incident”.
The clockwise carriageway repopened at about 8.40am, but anticlockwise remains shut.
The incident took place between J5 for the M26 and J4 for Orpington.
INRIX, the traffic and travel service, says: “M25 in both directions closed, queuing traffic due to serious accident, road sweeper and a crane involved between J5 M26 and J4 (Orpington).

“Congestion to Clacket Lane services between J6 and J5 Anticlockwise, back to J2 A2 (Darenth Interchange) Clockwise, the A21 is struggling northbound as traffic diverts through Sevenoaks.
“Anticlockwise has been closed since 5.25am to attend to the accident, the other side has been closed since 6.20am to allow an air ambulance to land.
“Diversion – Hollow Square diversion symbol, via the A21, A25 and the A224 through Sevenoaks and Badgers Mount.”
There is currently six miles of queues stretching beyond junction three for the Swanley Interchange and right up to junction 1a at Dartford.

A diversion is in place via the A21, A25 and the A224 through Sevenoaks and Badgers Mount.
Users stuck in the road closure have taken to Twitter, stating they haven’t moved for several hours.
Jennie Schofield said: “M25 still no signs of movement on the M25, we are at the brunt of it and have been sitting here since 5:15am, lots of emergency services working hard, and ques of traffic backing up as far as you can see. Hopefully everyone will be okay.”
She said there had been no indication of when they are likely to be on the move again.
Kent Police has released a statement on the M25 closure.
A spokesperson said: “Kent Police was called shortly after 5.10am on Friday 25 September 2020 following a report of a collision between a lorry and a road sweeping vehicle between junctions 5 and 4 of the M25.
“Emergency services are at the scene and the anti-clockwise carriageway is currently closed between junctions 5 and 4.
“Motorists are advised to expect delays and, where possible, to use alternative routes.”
