Gwent Police have said that one victim of the crash has been taken to hospital. The accident has left the M4 closed in both direction, from junction 24 Coldra to junction 26 Malpas. A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision involving one car on the M4 westbound carriageway between junction 24 and junction 25 in Newport at around 11.05am on Friday, January 3.
“The incident involved a silver BMW and a man has sustained a head injury, with South Wales Fire and Rescue, Welsh Ambulance Service and the Welsh Air Ambulance attending.”
Emergency services are attending the scene of the crash on the M4.
A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We were called on Friday 3 January at approximately 11:08 am to reports of a road traffic collision involving multiple vehicles near the Brynglas Tunnels, Newport.
“We responded with one emergency ambulance and our crew received the support of the Wales Air Ambulance. Our crew is currently at the scene.”
A singer, Ruriam, wrote on Twitter: “Wow there’s been an accident on the M4 near Cardiff.
“There was smoke coming from the car and people were trying to get the driver out. I’m praying they make it alive. It looked so bad.”

Gwent Police tweeted: “Emergency Services are dealing with a Road Traffic Collision on the M4, Between Junction 24 and 25.
“The road is closed in both directions between these junctions and diversions are in place.
“Please avoid the area if possible and find alternative routes for your journey.”
South Wales has tweeted: “Trapped traffic is currently being released on the Westbound but it will remain closed.
“Severe delays remains, please find alternative route.”
Disruption is expected until 3pm.
