The crash took place on the M40 southbound between junctions 4 and 2 in Buckinghamshire, nearby Loudwater, just before 6pm yesterday. The chaos has led to a five mile long tailback for drivers as first responders flocked to the scene. Of those injured, 11 were rushed to hospital for their injuries. Emergency services have not yet confirmed the cause of the collision, and are currently monitoring the situation.

South Central Ambulance service tweeted: “A large number of our ambulance family attended the collision on the M40 tonight to care for over 20 casualties. Ambulance crews and fire fighters from High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross and Maidenhead all worked on the scene.

Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service also tweeted earlier: “5.47pm: Crews have been called to a report of a collision on the #M40 southbound between junctions 4 (Handy Cross) and 3 (Loudwater).’

Reports from BerkshireLive and other local outlets claimed emergency services closed two lanes, causing five mile-long queues for drivers.

By 9:30pm the lanes were reopened, but major delays and congestion were reported along the M40 for the next hour.

Social media reports also claimed drivers involved in the crash were trapped in their vehicles, with emergency services attempting to free those involved by cutting cars open.

One Twitter user claimed: “Just gone past on opposite direction! It’s bad!

“Vehicles being cut open, gotta be 20-30 vehicles involved!”

Another user claimed the delays were in part due to one vehicle “blocking” the M40’s “hard shoulder” into the junctions.
