Drivers have been urged to avoid the area as a mile of tailbacks have formed.
Traffic officers are at the scene turning around cars to exit from Junction 21.
Motorists have reported a huge number of emergency vehicles at the scene.
One posted on Twitter: “So far we’ve seen about 8 fire engines, 2 unmarked police, and a number of traffic police cars go past. No sign of the smoke stopping yet. #m62 #vehiclefire #lorry.”
Photos from the scene show billowing plumes of black smoke, which can be seen for miles.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue tweeted: “Our crews are currently dealing with a lorry fire on the M62 between J21 and J22.
“The road is currently closed in both directions.
“Please avoid the area while our crews respond to this incident.”
Traffic service Inrix said diversion routes including Nehey and Denshaw and Woodhead Pass is currently “gridlocked”
