“The Argentine Police quickly went to the diplomatic headquarters and is now investigating the identity and motives of the actor in incident,” the embassy said in the statement.

Sources claim the man suffered from a psychiatric condition.

The man was uninjured and following the crash he was able to leave the car by his own means.

Witnesses who were at the scene said the man claimed to be armed with explosives, but authorities later confirmed there were no hazardous items in the car.

Police sources later confirmed the identity of the man and identified a video he had sent his university classmates.

In the video, recorded by the man himself, he can be seen speaking directly to the camera.

“I know the truth about Covid-19,” he said.

“I know the CIA is behind Covid and I need help from the Chinese Embassy. Please make this go viral.”

The Chinese Embassy confirmed the incident happened at around 8pm and that the gate was damaged, but no staff members were harmed.

The Chinese ambassador to Argentina was not at the scene at the time, as his residence is located in the Recoleta area of Buenos Aires.

Security forces activated the counter terrorism protocol to ensure the area was safe.

The car driver faces charges of public Intimidation, according to legal sources.

Federal and city police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Argentina’s Foreign Ministry declined comment.

It comes after Argentina’s president, Alberto Fernández, has entered voluntary isolation amid concerns of a hike in coronavirus cases.

Some of the country’s top politicians, including former Buenos Aires governor María Eugenia Vidal, have contracted the virus.

The president’s decision to self-quarantine was taken due to the “significant increase in the circulation of the virus,” presidential doctor Federico Saavedra said in a statement on Wednesday.

Argentina’s lockdown measures have proved successful in containing the pathogen, whereas other South American countries, such as Brazil and Chile, are seeing far more concerning numbers.

President Fernández is abiding by his doctor’s decree to cancel all “travel and personal meetings”.

He is set to remain in the Quinta de Olivos presidential residence in Greater Buenos Aires until further notice.
