MAN UTD 0-0 SOUTHAMPTON

8: Are we all aware that #ManUnitedPenaltyBingo is trending? Shouldn’t be because Jon Moss isn’t involved tonight. Meeeeeow.

5: It’s been a reasonable start from the visitors. Kyle Walker-Peters nips beyond a flat-footed Luke Shaw is close to collecting a nifty cross field pass but the ball narrowly evades his stretched leg and the ball rolls behind for a goal kick.

3: I’ve just seen the official printed team sheets for tonight (a bit late I know) but someone at Manchester United has put ‘Eddie Howe’ as the Southampton manager. You had one job! More news OFF the field and that’s that Sir Alex Ferguson is inside Old Trafford tonight. He regularly reads these blogs…

He’s another level

Well… Gary Neville likes Mason Greenwood. He likes him quite a bit.

“I am a miserable sod when it comes to analysing players at times,” Neville told Sky Sports. “But I can’t hide my excitement about this lad. He’s so good.

“Obviously Rashford and Martial are fantastic, but I think this kid is another level. He’s nearly 6ft, can handle the ball with both feet, score goals and receive the ball on the half-turn.”

There was more but my SkyGo decided to close. I’d like to add to Neville’s comments by revealing my admiration for just how hard Greenwood hits the ball. It’s a joke.

On a roll

Southampton are indeed BANG in-form, especially away from home. They have earned 27 points away from home this season, ranking them fourth in the Premier League.

Striker Danny Ings has also registered the opening goal a league-high nine times this season – boasting a tally of 19!

I remember scoffing when reading that Saints had signed Ings from Liverpool for £20million last summer. I can only apologise for my ignorance.

Did you know Ings played for Southampton’s academy but was released at the age of 10?

We’ll finish in the top four

A confident Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking ahead of tonight’s clash.

And it does sound like changes in his starting XI could be in the pipeline in the very near future.

“Yeah, I’ve seen that. Happy with the eleven and I’m happy with the staff as well to make sure that everyone recovers,” Solskjaer said when asked about fielding an unchanged side for the fifth-consecutive time which hasn’t happened since 1993.

“We’ve had a decent amount of recovery days in between, which we won’t have the rest of the season now. We picked the short straw in that respect, but we picked the long straw at the start of this period. Didn’t feel we needed to change.

“If we do our job, we’ll finish in the top four.”

He also said some nice things about a ‘bang in-form’ Southampton but I’ve opted not to transcribe that. Apologies.

UEFA ban (or not)

How to put this… OK, well the fact is Manchester City haven’t been banned from entering the Champions League next season.

UEFA issued a two-year ban in February after ruling City had committed “serious breaches” of Financial Fair Play regulations between 2012-2016.

But now, in July, the Court of Arbitration for Sport announced the club were cleared of “disguising equity funds as sponsorship contributions”.

Oh and the fine has been cut from £26.9million to £9m.

So that all means that fifth place will no longer secure Champions League football. Let the clambering begin!

The breakdown…

Well the wheels have well and truly fallen off Leicester.

Brendan Rodgers’ side had a ten-point advantage over fifth before the Pandemic struck and now… well they’ve had a nightmare.

The Foxes have won just once since the resumption and were absolutely thumped by relegation-threatened Bournemouth last night having held a one-goal lead at half-time.

Chelsea have been better, but defeats to West Ham and Sheffield United have opened the door (wide) for Manchester United.

But can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side do the business when leading the pack? It’s a different ball game not having to play catch-up.

Twitter reaction

Mo: A draw for Manchester United today and the last game between the Red Devils and Leicester will be a delicious bowl of football not to be missed by anyone.

Andy: In Manchester United penalty bingo, going for 24 minutes for the time when they are awarded their first penalty tonight.

Amrul: Huge day in race for Champions League, Manchester City have started a scramble.

Like that Mo. Like that a lot. Makes me think of soup. And as we all know, Chicken & Vegetable is the king of soups. I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise…

Team news – Manchester United

Thank you, Opta! They’ve just informed me that Manchester United are unchanged for the fifth Premier League game running. The first time since February 1993!

Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all continue in attack. Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes together in the middle of the park with Nemanja Matic providing the steel.

Team news – Southampton

Southampton also stay unchanged from their 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

I watched that match and they were extremely unlucky NOT to have won about 43-1.

Danny Ings starts and will presumably play the full 90 minutes as he looks to claw back Golden Boot leader Jamie Vardy, who has 23 goals.

Jannik Vestergaard has recovered from a thigh problem to make the squad.

Starting XI

Guess what? Manchester United are unchanged again… That’s the fifth game on the trot and someone more prepared than me will tell you exactly the last time happened.

I’ll then steal their information and tell you that in around five minutes. Full analysis coming up.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Shaw, Maguire, Lindelof, Matic, Pogba, Fernandes, Martial, Greenwood, Rashford.

Subs: Romero, Bailly, Mata, Pereira, Fred, James, Ighalo, McTominay, Williams.

Southampton XI: McCarthy, Walker-Peters, Bertrand, Stephens, Bednarek, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Armstrong, Adams, Ings.

Subs: Gunn, Vestergaard, Long, Obafemi, Hojbjerg, Smallbone, Vokins, Danso, Ferry.

The form…

Manchester United are just hot at the moment. It’s just a fact. They’ve been pretty outrageous going forward.

Their victory against Aston Villa meant they became the first Premier League team to win four consecutive matches by at least three goals.

Undefeated in their last 17 matches in all competitions and on their best run since going 18 games without defeat in March 2013.

So I guess it all sounds simple enough on paper.

But, and it’s a very BIG but, Manchester United have won just two of their last six Premier League home games against Southampton.

The Saints beat Manchester City and have Danny Ings banging them in for fun. I like the look of this game.

Evening…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Manchester United vs Southampton from Old Trafford.

Massive, massive night for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co. with the Red Devils looking to leapfrog Leicester and Chelsea into third position with three fixtures remaining.

Less enormous for Southampton, who have the tantalising prospect of jumping above Everton into 11th. Still a lovely place to be considering where Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side were earlier this season.

So… it’s the unstoppable force against the away-day specialists.

Team news and line ups coming shortly. Standby.

MAN UTD vs SOUTHAMPTON | TEAM NEWS

Manchester United are likely to field the same starting line-up in their last four Premier League fixtures.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reported no new injury concerns and managed to rest Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood for the final 20 minutes of the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Southampton are without Moussa Djenepo, Sofiane Boufal and Yan Valery, who are unlikely to feature again this season.

Defender Jannik Vestergaard has recovered from a thigh problem and will likely be included in the match-day squad.
