Manchester and Yorkshire lockdown: What are lockdown rules in Manchester and Yorkshire?

Which areas are affected by the new lockdown rules?

On Thursday evening Mr Hancock tweeted a list of the areas in Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and East Lancashire where, from midnight, households are now banned from meeting each other indoors.

The areas Mr Hancock highlighted include:

  • Greater Manchester
  • Blackburn with Darwen
  • Burnley
  • Hyndburn
  • Pendle
  • Rossendale
  • Bradford
  • Calderdale
  • Kirklees

The same restrictions will apply to the City of Leicester.

In light of the new restrictions, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham urged residents to observe the new restrictions to look after other people.

He said: “I ask all Greater Manchester residents – young and old alike – to protect each other by observing these new requirements.

“They will be reviewed weekly; meaning the more we stick to them, the quicker they will be removed.

“This is a place which prides itself on looking out for each other. We now need to be true to that by not acting selfishly and keeping the health of others in mind at all times.”

Earlier this week authorities in Oldham, Greater Manchester, also introduced a number of new measures to tackle the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the borough.

People in the borough are not allowed to have social visitors to their home, and people have been reminded to keep two metres apart when seeing friends and family outside.

Restrictions will not be lifted on visits to care homes, and people who are shielding have been told to continue shielding for a further two weeks from Friday.

The measures were introduced to reduce the risk of a second lockdown in the area.

Leicester and some surrounding areas were placed under a local lockdown earlier in the year in June.
