Mario Kart 9 could replace Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 as the big Nintendo Switch game for 2020, according to latest rumours. The Nintendo Switch is approaching its third birthday and in the time it’s been on sale the hybrid handheld console has been a huge hit. Latest sales figures indicate the Switch has sold over 52million units between its launch in March 2017 and the end of December 2019.

The Switch has outsold the SNES and is believed to have outsold than the Xbox One despite Microsoft’s system having a three and a half year head start.

Comparing how much the Switch and PS4 have both sold in their first three years on sale, Nintendo’s console is also slightly outpacing Sony’s.

Nintendo has previously said that they’re looking to sell over 100million Switch units in the console’s lifecycle.

To ensure this happens they arguably will need to make sure a steady stream of must-have exclusives keep on hitting the Switch.

Currently the Switch’s 2020 release schedule is looking slightly bare, with Animal Crossing New Horizons the biggest confirmed title for this year.

The Xenoblade Chronicles remake is also pencilled in for a 2020 launch, with an exact release window currently unclear.

But apart from those titles that’s about it for the major, confirmed new games that will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch this year.

It’s possible that Nintendo could have some surprises releases planned on the Switch for 2020 which may get announced in an upcoming Direct.

There are a number of games we haven’t heard about for awhile like Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 that fans may be holding out for a 2020 release.

While Ninty could also have a number of unannounced titles up their sleeves that they may reveal soon.

A new Paper Mario game as well as two new Metroid games, besides Metroid Prime 4, are also believed to be in the works for the Switch.

It had been thought that Nintendo had been planning to make Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 their big game for 2020.

Notable leaker Sabi, who correctly leaked tonnes of E3 2019 announcements, previously claimed that Breath of the Wild 2 had a planned-for 2020 launch.

But last week Sabi opened the door to Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 missing a 2020 release.

The news was revealed as Sabi responded to a follower that asked whether they had an update on BoTW 2.

Tweeter @perfectdark101 asked Sabi: “Is the Breath of the Wild sequel still internally planned for 2020 to your knowledge?”

Responding to the tweet Sabi said: “That’s actually a great question.

“I have NOT had a follow up from the 2020 source, as I haven’t requested they look into it since last October.

“However another extremely reputable source has heard more cynical things of it not being until next year (1/2)”.

Sabi added: “And has instead heard of another major franchise in particular having a holiday release this year that you probably don’t expect.

“I’ll have to try and follow up with the original source this or next week hopefully. I’ll post about it when I can to see what’s up. (2/2)”

And then on Friday Sabi in a post online said: “Botw2 taking longer than anticipated back during E3 2019, so it doesn’t seem to be this year’s holiday release, which adds more credence to the major title I was referencing on a tweet the other day.

“Neither are set in stone yet so take some salt. The more likely one has.. tires”.

The tweet has sparked speculation that Mario Kart 9 could be the surprise title that replaces BoTW in the 2020 Nintendo Switch release schedule.

And while a Breath of the Wild 2 release date delay would be a big blow to Switch fans, a new Mario Kart in 2020 would surely go down a treat.

At the time of writing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the biggest selling Nintendo Switch game of all time.

According to figures that ran until the end of December, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 22.96million figures.

This is ahead of Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Super Mario Odyssey.

Zelda Breath of the Wild, which was a Switch launch title, is in fourth place on the best-selling games list after shifting 16.34million units.

The figures highlight how popular Mario Kart is, and the release of a new game in the series for the Switch would surely be a huge seller.

Hopefully Nintendo will reveal more on their 2020 plans for the Switch during their next Direct.

It’s possible another Nintendo Direct could be held this month, ahead of the launch of the first big Switch game of the year – Animal Crossing.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is out on March 20, so Ninty could hold a Direct before then which reveals more on the highly anticipated title.

And it’s in that Direct that Nintendo may reveal more about some of the games coming to the Switch in 2020.
