Melania Trump fury: FLOTUS accused of ‘lying’ in latest Twitter post about life expectancy

The First Lady is known for updating her fans regularly on her whereabouts, but her most recent tweet has left some of her followers confused. Melania tweeted: “For the first time in 29 years, drug overdose deaths have dropped by 4.1% and life expectancy has increased by 4 years!

“Proud of this administration for ensuring a safer and healthier future for our nation’s children. #BeBest”

However, according to news site Raw Story, only half of Melania’s tweet was factually accurate.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) did report a 4.1% decrease in fatalities but Melania’s claim that life expectancy has “increased by four years” was reportedly inaccurate.

The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics said that life expectancy actually increased by just one month in 2018.

CNN reported on Thursday: “Life expectancy in the United States in 2018 was 78.7 years — an increase of 0.1 year compared with life expectancy of 78.6 years in 2017, the NCHS reported in a study published Thursday.

“The 2018 estimate remains lower than the peak of 78.9 years in 2014.”

Melania’s post featured a link to The White House website which included a statement from the Office of National Drug Control Policy Director Jim Carroll and Senior Counsellor to the President Kellyanne Conway.

The webpage did not mention that life expectancy has increased by four years.

Mr Carroll said: “This sign of progress is an example of what can happen when an Administration prioritises an issue, makes the necessary investments, and deploys a whole-of-government approach to accomplishing our ultimate goal of saving lives.

“While there are still far too many Americans dying from drug overdoses, today’s historic news means fewer parents burying their children, fewer friends mourning the loss of their loved ones, and fewer communities hurting – and that is an incredible thing.”

Ms Conway added: “Those suffering from addiction were ignored, indeed forgotten, for decades. In 2018, there were 4.1% fewer deaths in America from drug overdoses than in 2017.

“President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and the entire Trump Administration have brought an unprecedented level of leadership to combating this crisis, and for the first time in nearly 30 years, drug overdose deaths have declined in America.”
