MLB Draft 2020 dates, start time, pick order, TV channels & more to know for shortened baseball draft 1

Nothing is normal in 2020, and that includes the MLB Draft.

This year, with the coronavirus destroying the sports landscape, the draft is going to be shortened to just five rounds, way down from the usual 40-round renditions we’ve seen in years past. This could result in lots of moving parts: high schoolers attending college, juniors in college staying for their senior years and a seemingly endless number of undrafted free agents potentially being signed.

Originally, the MLB Draft was in for a major change: pushing the date back a week to allow college players to attend while shifting the event from MLB Network studios in Secaucus, N.J. to Omaha, Neb., the site of the College World Series. Unfortunately, those changes will have to wait a year, as the coronavirus is forcing the draft to happen virutally, a la the 2020 NFL Draft.

Aside from those minor, minuscule changes, it’s business as usual for the 2020 MLB Draft.

Where is the MLB Draft in 2020?

Originally scheduled to be held on site at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., MLB was forced to drastically alter its plans for the draft due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, general managers and other team front office staff will make their selections virtually.

MLB Draft length, picks for 2020

In total, 160 picks will be made across five rounds in the 2020 MLB Draft. MLB officials decided to cut the draft from 40 rounds to five due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Teams are permitted to sign an unlimited numbers of undrafted players in 2020 to account for the abbreviated draft.
