Moment lightning strikes Washington Monument in 'Biblical' message

This is the moment a bolt of forked lightening struck the Washington Monument in DC last night – with conspiracy theorists claiming it is a “Biblical” message from God.

Dramatic footage shows electrical discharge flare across the capital city, before a fork of lightning stabs the monument.

The four-second long clip has been watched more than 9 million times on Twitter and sparked wild theories about it being a bad omen or a sign that “God is unhappy”.

It comes after US President Donald Trump had a strange photo-op amid the protests about George Floyd’s death.

The President, who has sworn to take a firm stand against riots, walked a short distance from the White House to St John’s Episcopal Church on Lafayette Square.

Flanked by security staff, he held up a Bible and declared: “We’re the greatest country in the world.”

But some Christians were angered by the move and several people claimed the lightning was a sign of God’s wrath.

“Even GOD is speaking out against Trump,” tweeted one.

A second said: “It’s what happens when the anti-Christ touches the Bible for a photo op.”

Someone else chipped in: “That’s what we get when our leaders abuse religion for a prop.

“And the Bible upside down … I knew it would be beyond redemption!”

But, in an apolitical message, a fourth tweeted: “Don’t look at this as a message from God about America and what our gov’t should do.

“Look at it as a reminder from God that our power is puny, and our time is limited.

“How will we stand before our Creator when He asks if we loved all neighbors?”

The 169m obelisk was built to honour George Washington, the first President of the United States, in 1848.
