Drivers were left stunned when a tiny monkey dressed in an American football shirt was spotted hanging out of a car at traffic lights.
A clip of a monkey riding shotgun wearing The University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide American football team shirt has been doing the rounds online after it was posted on Twitter Tuesday.
The little capuchin appears to peer out from the passenger-side window of a black Dodge Charger on McFarland Boulevard in Tuscaloosa in the US.
It was shared by local man Charles Newman who captioned it “things are getting a little bananas in Tuscaloosa”.
He said the video was captured by friend – a passenger in a car stopped nearby.
At one point the nimble little creature peeks its head right out the car window to eye up neighbouring motorists.
The unusual scene has prompted plenty of delighted responses, with one woman in the video heard to remark “it’s like Friends”, a nod to character Ross Geller’s pet monkey Marcel.
The people shooting the 30-second clip also worry he may jump out until they spot he has a leash tied around his waist.
The video ends with the car driving away but has since being posted online on Tuesday night and viewed over 155,000 times, with hundreds of comments.
It caused even more of a storm when people clocked what the little guy was wearing with the Alabama Athletics Department joining in the fun.
“We need more Bama Monkey in our lives,” a tweet from their account read.
Another man remarked the weird scene was nothing unusual for this year.
“There is truly nothing in 2020 that’s surprising anymore” he said.
“Monkey in an Alabama T-shirt at a stoplight? Welcome to the party.”
“This slacker monkey isn’t even driving,” another quipped.
Pet monkeys riding around in supercars is nothing new.
The primates are being treated like mini humans, or used for entertainment purposes.
Last year one spoilt spider monkey called Chico was been captured on camera in the UK, being paraded as the ultimate accessory as he is taken for a ride in a flash car by his owner.
The animal, who has a specially adapted car seat, is handed fruit as a couple fawn over him in the bizarre clip from 2019 shot in a supermarket car park.
