Monty Don shares heartache as beloved dog is involved in freak accident 'Impaled herself'

Monty Don, 70, took to his Twitter account to share in harrowing details how his five-year-old dog “speared her throat” after chasing a stick. The Gardeners’ World star told his 191,000 followers that the consequences for the dog were almost fatal, as the stick missed her “arteries by millimetres”.

He wrote: “Last night Nellie had a very near miss.

“Chasing a stick, she impaled herself on it and speared her throat, missing two arteries by millimetres.

“Thanks to our brilliant vet, working at night, she is fine – if very sorry for herself.

“So please DONT THROW STICKS FOR DOGS,“ the gardening expert urged.

One follower pointed out to Monty that sticks are more “eco-friendly” to play with than man-made toys.

They said: “Hang on Monty. Dogs love chasing, fetching and carrying sticks!

“And they’re a darn sight more eco-friendly than anything manufactured we might use instead.

“Condemn the use of sharp sticks and I’m with you.”

Monty quickly responded: “They do – Nell is obsessed by it. But this was just something she picked up in a field.

“By all means let them pick and carry them – but don’t throw them. My vet says this kind of damage and worse – happens all the time.”

Another fan wrote to the gardening expert: “This vet’s wife has huge sympathy chances of survival limited cos of splinters in throat and/or infection so Please total vigilance for next two weeks message from vet the spouse.” (sic)

Monty explained he had “cleaned” the wound and the dog had “lots of quite large material removed”.

The next step for Nellie will be to have a course of “antibiotics prescribed by the vet”.

Meanwhile, many others sent across their well wishes to the pet, as they wished her a speedy recovery after the incident.

It comes after the garden expert recently paid tribute to his beloved dog Nigel after he passed away.

Back in May, Monty’s other golden retriever died after suffering “violent, unstoppable seizures”.

The dog made regular appearances on BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World and even lent his name to Monty’s book Nigel: My Family and Other Dogs.

The star shared a photo of a terracotta pot with a sentimental engraving.

It read: “Nigel 2008-2019,” along with a small picture of the dog.

Monty captioned the post: “This arrived today from Whichford in memory of the old boy.I shall have to plant it appropriately #tennisballtree.”
