Police are hunting for two men who allegedly raped a mum in front of her two children in Pakistan.
A total of 12 people have been arrested as the country’s Prime Minister Imran Khan told investigators to catch the culprits “as soon as possible”.
The woman was reportedly attacked and robbed of more than £1,000 after her 4×4 ran out of fuel and left her stranded on a motorway.
She called a police helpline but was attacked after being told no official had been assigned to the area in Gujjarpura in the early hours of Tuesday, it is said.
Two men smashed her car’s window and forced the woman and her two children into bushes, Geo News reported.
The pair then allegedly raped her and snatched her purse containing Rs 1 lakh (£1,060), a bracelet, car registration papers and 3 bank cards.
She was taken to hospital and a medical file has been prepared.
Pakistan’s PM tweeted he was following the case closely and had asked investigators for the “arrest and sentencing of those involved in the incident as soon as possible”.
The former cricketer adding that his government would look into how to strengthen laws to deal with an apparent increase in cases involving the rape of women and children.
Inspector-General of Punjab Police Inam Ghani said: “We have done great work so far in the motorway rape case. We have located the village from which the suspects were from.”
He said that 20 police teams have been probing the case and some 12 arrests had been made.
The police chief added substantial evidence has been collected with further investigation underway.
