NASA Perseverance rover: Alien-hunting Mars 2020 mission presses on for summer launch

Then, after a seven-month journey through space, NASA aims to land the rover on the surface of Mars on February 18, 2021.

During the descent and landing, the rover will be carried by a rocket-powered descent stage.

In April, the descent stage was fitted with an aeroshell backshell, which includes parachutes and other components critical to the mission’s success.

NASA said: “The aeroshell will encapsulate and protect Perseverance and its descent stage during their deep space journey to Mars and during descent through the Martian atmosphere, which generates intense heat.”
