NCIS cancelled: CBS won't air new episode of Gibbs drama tonight – here's why

NCIS viewers have had a difficult month. With just a handful of episodes left of season 17 of the CBS show, viewers suffered a brutal two-week hiatus earlier this month thanks to a political event – Super Tuesday. Now, fans have been looking forward to jumping back into the world of Agent Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon), alongside his team of professionals, to round off the season.

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait around for the show to continue once again, as tonight’s episode of NCIS is not the next episode in the season.

Instead of airing season 17, episode 18 this evening, CBS is instead repeating season 17’s episode two.

The official description of tonight’s episode on CBS reads: “NCIS season 17 episode 2, INTO THE LIGHT. With their lives in danger, Gibbs and Ziva’s rogue investigation takes an unexpected turn when a possible terrorist plot is revealed…”

While fans of the show may instantly assume this schedule change is due to the breakout of coronavirus in recent days and weeks, they would be mistaken.

This schedule change was already arranged before the virus outbreak – perhaps in an attempt to jog viewers’ memories about events which occurred almost 20 episodes ago.

Episode two, which is now being rerun during episode 18’s slot, features Agent Ziva’s (Cote de Pablo) exit, which originally left viewers completely bereft.

However, could the choice to rerun this episode mean something is going to happen regarding Ziva once again?

Or could it simply be the next step in Agent Gibbs’ journey without his trusty sidekick?

As fans replied to his announcement, Brian continued: “We’ll produce 20 of our 24 episode order.

“It’s been a tremendous year, and we have a few more great episodes for you all. Thank you so much for all the support.”

He went on to praise the show’s fans for their support for the show and even suggested the final episodes would be cut because of the coronavirus.

“We can’t do this show without you all watching,” Brian continued. “And I appreciate you so much.
