Last week NCIS teased fans with a bounty of potential pairings, only to stick to their current approach of the painfully slow burn. Now with a long delay between episodes, devoted viewers of the CBS procedural are more starved than ever for romantic content.

As NCIS continues its almost unprecedented run of 17 seasons, the romantic subplots have gained just as much of a following as its epic naval cases.

Viewers were anticipating the new episode, Ephemeral, in which the team deal with a unique case involving the suicide of a retired sailor.

Regulars Nick Torres (played by Wilmer Valderrama), Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham) and Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon) were back and joined by special guest star Nike Doukas as NHHC Deputy Director Marie Stanhope.

Nike is recognisable for his special appearances across a variety of US shows, including Modern Family, Desperate Housewives and Criminal Minds.

Last week’s episode teased multiple romantic pairings, but the team’s loved up exploits were swerved by a murder investigation involving a suspect Gibbs’ friend knew from a dating app.

After Ephemeral, fans will have to wait until March 10 for new NCIS content.

Unfortunately, Nick and Ellie failed to give viewers even a scrap of romantic content.

Many disgruntled viewers took to Twitter, calling for the show to hurry up and get to the good stuff.

Fans were speculating before the episode dropped that today will finally be the day the pair seal the deal.

One fan theorised: “@NCIS_CBS Will #Ellick hook up tonight? Pls say yes #NCIS.”

After Nick was hit by a sports car, it was speculated that Ellie could play a part in nursing him back to health.

Other than a quick cute moment with some tasty Valentine’s chocolate, however, the pair didn’t get a chance to couple up.
