NCIS fans have been eager for Tobias Fornell (played by Joe Spano) to return ever since he last appeared in the season 16 finale. However, there was no sign of him throughout the 17th outing, leading some to wonder whether he will be back again. Here’s everything revealed about his potential return so far.
Will Fornell return in NCIS season 18?
Fornell first appeared in NCIS way back in the first-ever episode 17 seasons ago.
The former FBI agent was known for collaborating with the NCIS team as well as his friendship with Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon).
Over the years, he has appeared in every season apart from 17 and across a massive 49 episodes in a recurring role.
Therefore, viewers have been eagerly anticipating when he might come back again.

However, he did not appear at all in season 17 of the show aside from a small mention in the episode Musical Chairs and Lonely Hearts.
Viewers will remember Gibbs dropped a hint in the episode he was still helping him out with the opioids case.
There have been some theories Fornell was initially tipped to appear in the final four episodes of season 17.
As fans will know, these were cut short due to the outbreak of coronavirus COVID-19 had an impact on television production.
Therefore, it looks like all hopes for a Fornell return are resting on season 18 at the moment.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, it seems very likely Joe Spano will reprise his role in the new outing.
This is especially the case as he is the longest-running recurring character and as viewers know, he has unfinished business with Gibbs.
NCIS season 18 is expected to return later in 2020.
