However, on Friday state media reported Kim attended the opening ceremony of the Sunchon Phosphatic Fertilizer Factory.
Korean Central News Agency claimed Kim was joined by his sister Kim Yo Jong.
The youngest child of their father, Kim Jong-il, Ms Kim was reported to be the figure lined up to replace her brother if he died.
Ms Kim is the deputy director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
Both are believed to have been educated using aliases in Switzerland.
The Workers’ Party controls a national front which all parties must be part of to run in elections whilst the state also controls the news media.
