Meghan Trainor, 26, has joined The Voice UK 2020 as a new coach, replacing Jennifer Hudson who quit last year due to filming commitments. The US singer will be seen judging contestants’ voices alongside returning stars, Olly Murs, Will.i.am and Sir Tom Jones.
Speaking about how Meghan was during filming for the blind auditions, Olly admitted they were “annoyed” with her as the first contestant of the series chose her to be their team captain.
In an interview with OK! Magazine about the All About That Bass hitmaker, Olly said: “She surprised us. She was nervous on the first day of filming but she grew as the day went on.
“She said before she went out, ‘Oh my God, Olly, no one is going to pick me. What have I got to do?’ and then she got the first competitor!
“All four of us turned for this one girl and Meghan got her. We were annoyed,” he laughed.
He continued: “We were thinking, ‘There’s no chance she’s got this one, we’re pros.’
“When I was the newbie, I thought, ‘I’m not going to say too much.’
“Before I joined the show I sat in my living room with my back to the TV pretending I was in the blind auditions!”
The show, which swapped from BBC One to ITV in 2017, is presented by Emma Willis.
The star has been fronting the programme since 2014 and talking to OK Magazine, she admitted she regularly questions the opinions of the coaches when it comes to judging their voices.
Emma spilled: “There have been points where I’ve just gone, ‘What the f**k are they doing?’ Can they not hear what I can hear?’
“And they can’t hear what I can hear because I don’t have their proper musical ears.”
Emma acknowledged she doesn’t have the expertise as the judges do to make the big decisions on who gets to go through to the next round.
“They know what they’re doing and I have to remember I’m not in that chair,” she said.
“Nor can I sing! But they’ve got it, they know what they’re doing.”
Back in September, Meghan announced she was “excited” to be a part of the singing competition.
She said: “I am so excited and honoured to join Sir Tom, will.i.am and Olly Murs as the new Coach on The Voice UK!
“It’s a dream come true and I can’t wait to sit in the chair with my own button and listen to some incredible new talent!”
Sir Tom recently revealed he has a say in which new coaches join the ITV show, telling The Sun Online: “They just asked me [about Meghan Trainor joining].
