OnePlus has released a new beta build of its next OxygenOS update for OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro which includes Live Caption. As a quick reminder, Live Caption debuted on the Google Pixel 4 back in October as an exclusive software feature for the device (before it rolled out to other handsets in the Pixel range soon after).

As the name suggests, Live Caption provides subtitles for any audio played on a device, with a few exceptions – the feature won’t be able to transcribe lyrics from a song you’re listening to, for instance.

The chances are Live Caption wasn’t really made for you. Sure, it’s great for when you forget your headphones on the morning commute, but it’s really intended for the 466 million people in the world who are deaf or hard of hearing. Enabling the feature is simple, OnePlus says all you need to do is head to Settings > System > Accessibility > Live Caption.

Then, summon your phone’s volume controls and you should see a new button underneath the adjustment slider. Tapping this will turn on Live Caption and immediately display subtitles if you’re watching a video.

Google claims it worked with deaf and hard of hearing communities to create the feature. In Express.co.uk’s testing, the feature works exceptionally well.

In addition to giving OnePlus fans Live Caption for the first time, the latest build of OxygenOS for the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro also brings the Android February 2020 security patch, optimised RAM management and “improved content” on the device’s Settings page.
