The race this year is wide open. The 2020 Golden Globes has unofficially kicked off the sprint to the golden statuette and already thrown in some major surprises. Towards the end of last year, everyone was buzzing about Joker. It topped many reviews of the year and seemed a certainty for awards season glory. Now, though, it is languishing in fourth or fifth place with two major blockbusters and cult foreign movie way ahead.
The Golden Globes is unusual, of course, because it splits the major categories between Drama on one side and Music and Comedy on the other.
It passed over JOker in favour of Sam Mendes’s First World War epic 1917 for Best Drama.
Once Upon A Time in Hollywood took the other gong. But all eyes will be on the Best ForeignLanguage Film, Parasite, which most UK bookies currently have as the hot favourite for the main Oscar.

Oscars 2020 Best Picture: Uk bookies odds for Best Film
UK bookies Coral just announced their latest odds for Best Picture.
Parasite leads the pack at 5/2, just ahead of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood on 11/4.
1917 is also extremely close on 10/3 making it currently a three-horse race.
Furthebehidn lie Scorcese’s Netflix gangster drama The Irishman on 6/1 and then The Joker at 8/1.
It’s a very similar picture with Ladbrokes. The UK bookies also have all five films on exactly the same odds.
What is most interesting, though, is the sudden increase in the rankings for Once Upon A Time in Hollywood which had its odds slashed following the Globes.
Ladbrokes told Express Online: “Don’t be surprised to see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood have just as much success at the Oscars as it did at the Golden Globes, with odds on a Best Picture gong continuing to shorten.”
Boylesports has gone one step further.
Boylesports actually now has Once Upon A Time in Hollywood out in front, with odds of 2/1 cut dramatically down from 5/1 after the Globes win last night.
Parasite and 1917 are tied on 3/1 with The Irishman and JOker again on their customary 6/1 and 8/1.
All the bookies are firmly agreed on one point of glory for Joker, however, with Joaquin Phoenix overwhelming favourite as Best Actor.
Boylesports have him on 1/7 while Coral offer odds of 1/6.
MORE INFO ON THE PARASITE NEXT
The Parasite is a Korean black comedy-thriller directed by Bong Jonn-ho. It follows a poor family who try to scam a wealthy family into employing them.
Although it won the Palme D’Or at Cannes, it is not a niche arthouse speciality but had broad appeal. The movie has grossed $ 130million worldwide, including an impressive $ 24million in the US, already more than 2009 Best Picture The Hurt Locker.
It remains to be seen whether the Oscar nominations next Monday will include Parasite for Best Picture or simply the newly rebranded Best International Feature Film (previously Best Foreign Language Film).
The main rivals will be hoping for the latter.
