Paul Gascoigne 'wanted to go back in dressing room' after seeing Vinnie Jones on pitch

Gascoigne, affectionately known to millions across the world as Gazza, was targeted by Jones as the pair squared up during a match between Newcastle United and Wimbledon in 1988. Jones, who has gone on to become a household name thanks to his appearances in films such as ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ and ‘Snatch’, clutched onto Gazza’s manhood after “something snapped” inside of him. The incident was captured by Daily Mirror photographer Monte Fresco and would go on to become an symbolic picture in the history of football.

And Jones, who at the time was playing for the now-defunct London outfit, is likely to be quizzed about the episode when he appears on ITV’s ‘Piers Morgan’s Life Stories’ tonight.

Jones was renowned for his aggressive manner on the pitch, but was also a trophy-winning midfielder, claiming the FA Cup in the late-Eighties.

But when reunited with Gazza on talkSPORT for the 30th anniversary of the infamous altercation, Jones admitted to losing his temper with the England star.

He said: “We came up to the game, the Newcastle game at home, and Gazza’s gone out there early and there’s a frenzy.

“And something snapped in me.”

Gazza, who endured his own controversial image within the game, recalled that he got “nerves” after seeing Jones and his fury and “just wanted to go back into the dressing room”.

He added: “I felt like saying ‘you know gaffer, I’m not feeling too well today’.”

Jones replied: “I thought, when I see him I just want to kill him.”

Before Gazza concluded: “So you know, I just looked at him and said, ‘Hi Vinnie’. And he went, ‘It’s just me and you today fat boy.’

“And I thought I’m in for it here.”

The pair have talked previously about the event, with Jones often appearing unapologetic for his role in the celebrated encounter, telling ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’ in 2019: “I’d have grabbed him by the hair if he had any so I grabbed him by the nuts.”

But in more recent times, Jones has cut a more heartbroken figure as he struggled to cope with the loss of his wife Tanya last year, who died following a six-year battle with cancer.

Ahead of tonight’s show, a clip was released which shows host Piers Morgan discussing Tanya with the former Chelsea footballer.

Within the video, Jones is shown a piece where he is talking about why he was destined to marry Tanya.

Following the excerpt, Morgan asked Jones: “Before that even came up, you were getting emotional there. Is it still unbearable almost, to see her?”

To which a tearful Jones replied: “No, I suppose it’s probably the memories…”

‘Piers Morgan’s Life Story’ is on ITV1 at 10pm tonight.
