Peaky Blinders season 6 release: Director shares worrying update 'It's a new world'

The likes of Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) and Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) haven’t been seen on-screen since the season five finale of Peaky Blinders aired on BBC One in September 2019. It didn’t take long for the sixth season of the Birmingham-based crime drama to be confirmed but as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, its release has been left up in the air.

With the outbreak of COVID-19 bringing a halt to TV productions around the globe, filming for season six was put on the backburner.

As a result, Peaky Blinders fans were left completely in the dark as to when they’d see the Shelbys back in action.

Now, director Anthony Byrne has shed some light on when production and filming can resume.

However, fans shouldn’t be expecting the hit drama to return anytime soon as filming likely won’t continue until “early next year.”

Speaking to Digital Spy, Anthony shared the worrying update on the state of a return date as he said: “In an ideal world it would be great to be prepping again towards the end of the year with a view to start shooting early next year.

“That feels achievable, whether that’s true or not, I have no idea.”

“If we did start shooting in January [2021], we wouldn’t finish until May or June,

“And then it’s another six months of editing,” he added.

Therefore, a potential release date for the next series wouldn’t fall until late 2021 at the very earliest.

Fans may even be looking at the possibility of a 2022 premiere, almost three years after season five’s climax.

Despite the future remaining rather uncertain, the director did reveal he was actually happy the crew hadn’t filmed any content prior to lockdown.

Other shows have been working and rehashing scenes filmed prior to the government’s guidelines but the BBC drama didn’t get that far.
