Penguin spotted 'plodding' along quiet village road by police officers on patrol

Police on duty in the early hours of the morning are well-accustomed to dealing with worse-for-wear punters after last orders at the pub.

But officers out on routine patrol recently were greeted by a more unusual late night wanderer as they drove through a quiet village.

In a post on Broxtowe North Police’s Facebook page, the force said the “friendly” Humboldt bird, which had escaped from a farm enclosure, was spotted walking in the middle of a road in the village of Strelley, near Nottingham, last weekend.

Pc Gareth Philp, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We see some very interesting things while out on patrol, but a penguin walking up the middle of the road has to be one of the more bizarre findings we have come across.

“We nicknamed him Po-Po. He posed for some pictures with us and he was very friendly with our officers while we made contact with his owner.

“He was then safely returned home.”

Officers in Nottinghamshire were perplexed when they came across the Humboldt penguin

Neighbourhood Inspector Gordon Fenwick, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Our officers are trained to deal with a variety of incidents with complex demands and it is great that we quickly reunited the penguin with their owner.”

As people have had to adjust to a different way of life since the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, penguins living in enclosures have also had their daily routines disrupted.

When they had to shut their doors to the public in March, the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago decided to take the opportunity to allow its curious penguins to roam the site and visit the other animals.
