Piers Morgan outlines key reason why BA jobs should be saved by the government

On his Twitter page, the GMB host hit out at Boris Johnson’s government for not doing more to help the 12,000 British Airway’s staff members who are facing job losses. Meanwhile, Victoria Beckham was revealed earlier this month to have kept on staff at her stores during the coronavirus lockdown by using the government’s furlough scheme to pay their wages. Piers tweeted: “If the Government is bailing out Victoria Beckham’s loss-making vanity fashion company with taxpayer money, it should bail out our flagship airline @British_Airways and stop 12,000 people losing their jobs.”

Yesterday it was announced that the British Airline’s parent company IAG said it needed to impose a “restructuring and redundancy programme” until the demand for air travel returns.

The pilots union Balpa said it was “devastated” at the news and would fight every single job that was cut.

In a statement, IAG said: “The proposals remain subject to consultation, but it is likely that they will affect most of British Airways’ employees and may result in the redundancy of up to 12,000 of them.”

BA chief executive Alex Cruz wrote: “In the last few weeks, the outlook for the aviation industry has worsened further and we must take action now.

“We are a strong, well-managed business that has faced and overcome, many crises in our hundred-year history.

“We must overcome this crisis ourselves, too. There is no government bailout standing by for BA and we cannot expect the taxpayer to offset salaries indefinitely…

“We will see some airlines go out of business.”

The statement came as the airline had already put 23,000 of its 42,000 staff on furlough.

Balpa’s general secretary Brian Strutton said: “This has come as a bolt out of the blue from an airline that said it was wealthy enough to weather the Covid storm and declined any government support.

“Balpa does not accept that a case has been made for these job losses and we will be fighting to save every single one.”

Many businesses have turned to the government’s 3-month furlough scheme since its inception including millionaire entrepreneur Victoria Beckham.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak;’ rescue package was announced last month, allowing businesses to claim up to 80 per cent of wages to a maximum of £2500.

Ms Beckham is claimed to make up the 20 per cent for those she has placed on the Government scheme.

However, she has come under scrutiny for taking the scheme in the first place, when she is reported to own a handbag collection of £1.5 million alone.

The former Spice Girl also recently purchased a £17 million penthouse in Miami with her husband David.

The longtime couple also recently splurged a pricey £100,00 on their eldest son Brooklyn’s 21st birthday party.

Piers Morgan has previously launched a scathing attack on Ms Beckham after she posted a video praising the NHS.

He wrote on Twitter: “Sorry, but this makes me puke. If you care this much about the NHS, @victoriabeckham – then why are you taking taxpayer money the NHS desperately needs –

“And you DON’T need – to furlough your staff & prop up your failing business.”

A spokesperson for Ms Beckham responded: “We are working hard to ensure our much-valued VB team are protected by keeping our business healthy. Having carefully assessed all our options, we made the decision to furlough a proportion of staff on an enhanced package.”
