The Prime Minister, speaking from Downing Street, declared the pandemic a “national emergency” and said people should only leave their homes for urgent reasons or to exercise for one hour only Mr Johnson said: “If you don’t follow the rules the police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings.”

Piers, who has been a frequent critic of the Prime Minister’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, took to his Twitter to share his thoughts on the newly imposed rules.

He wrote: ”It’s come dangerously late, but Prime Minister @BorisJohnson finally seems to understand the gravity of this Coronavirus crisis & has taken the drastic action needed to protect the country from this deadly disease.

“His speech was serious, significant and necessary.”

“It’s down to us now.

“We ALL owe it to each other to abide by these new lockdown rules.

While a fourth tweeted: “They need naming and shaming. My MD has been nothing short of excellent and we have rallied around the company in response.”

It comes as Boris has said that people can travel to work, but only when work can not be done from home, leaving a loophole for businesses to remain open.

Gatherings of more than two people will be banned, excluding those in the same household

This means people should not be meeting with friends and family members they don’t live with.

Parks will remain open but only for one hour of exercise, however, playgrounds will be closed.

All shops selling non-essential items will be closed, along with libraries, playgrounds, outdoor gyms and placed of worship.

Weddings, baptisms and other ceremonies will be halted, although people will still be allowed to attend funerals.
