PS Plus January news ahead of free games launch
Sony revealed some good news today that is sure to guarantee that more big PS Plus launches arrive beyond January 2020.
Many gamers were keeping an eye on the company’s CES conference, which promised to offer a few little updates regarding the PS4 and perhaps even the PS5.
And while we didn’t get much in the way of big next-gen reveals, Sony did provide the latest stats regarding the success of the current PlayStation 4 console.
PlayStation boss Jim Ryan spoke on stage about the PS4 console, its subscriptions services and the PSVR headset accessory.
And this included the announcement that over 106 million PS4 consoles have now been sold during its complete lifecycle.
That places it behind the PS2, Nintendo DS and Game Boy on the list of best selling consoles ever.
It’s hard to predict whether Sony will sell enough to get a place in the top three, what with the PS5 launching later this year.
And that wasn’t the only stats talked about during the CES conference, with the tech giant also announcing that 1.15 billion games had been sold on PS4 worldwide.
And the PlayStation Plus subscription service also seems to be going from strength-to-strength, which will be important for Sony in the future.
That’s because there are now 103 million monthly active PSN users accounted for and 38.8 million PS Plus subscribers.
That tops the numbers revealed back in 2019 and makes for great reading for Sony when it comes to the launch of the PS5.
It shows that the current strategy of offering top games as free downloads is currently working and helping to retain subscribers.
Other stats will also make interesting reading for Sony during 2020 and beyond.
Ryan confirmed that over five million PlayStation VR headsets have been sold, making it a VR market leader.
And if the trend continues with the launch of the PS5, Sony should really think about offering some kind of VR tie-in for PS Plus too.
Gamers lost the free games for PS3 and PS Vita last year, and it would make sense to bring the PSVR into the fold if it continues to sell.
When it comes to the free games available during January 2020, these will be going live later today, January 7.
Confirmed last week by Sony, gamers will soon be able to download Goat Simulator and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection on PS4.
Both games will be available from 7th January to 3rd February, at which time new titles will be released on the PlayStation Store.
A message from PlayStation adds: “From the groundbreaking storytellers at Naughty Dog, comes the genre-defining epic that revolutionised adventure storytelling, rebuilt by Bluepoint Games with the power of the PS4 system.
“Follow the perilous journey of Nathan Drake across the globe, from humble beginnings to extraordinary discoveries. Meet an unforgettable cast of characters as Drake puts life and friendship on the line in a race against ruthless enemies to uncover unimaginable treasure.
“Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection includes the single-player campaigns only for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.”
