Rail fares hike: How much more will trains cost in 2020? When will rail fares spike?

National Rail said July’s Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation is used to determine the increase in fare price for the next year.

The National Rail website states: “Successive governments have used July’s Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation to determine the increase in the price of these fares.

“This year’s RPI figure was 2.8% meaning that for the third year in a row, fares have been held below the rate of inflation.”

The Rail Delivery Group announced this week the rail industry will be introducing 1,000 extra train carriages in 2020, increasing the nation’s fleet from 15,000 to nearly 16,000 by the end of 2020.
