The man was knifed outside St Bart’s Church on the corner of the A4 London Road and St Bartholomew’s Road shortly after 6pm. One witness described seeing paramedics performing CPR on someone lying on a footpath.
South Central Ambulance Service said it sent two ambulances, RAF Responders, a commanding officer and an air ambulance to the scene.
There was also a heavy police presence in the area as officers dealt with the incident.
Thames Valley Police said one man suffered stab wounds and had been rushed to hospital.
In a statement, the force said: “Our officers are at the scene of an assault which occurred earlier this evening in the London Road area of Reading.

“A man has sustained stab wounds and has been taken to hospital for treatment.
“He is in a stable condition.
“An investigation into the incident is underway, and members of the public will see an increased police presence while this takes place.
“Thank you to everyone for their patience during this time.”

One woman said she saw paramedics performing treating a person on a pavement.
She tweeted: “Those in Reading, keep clear of London Road, there as been a stabbing.
“All roads blocked, heavy police response – saw paramedics giving someone on the pavement CPR about an hour ago. Stay safe.”
A second person said the attack happened outside his house.

Police rushed to the scene of the stabbing in Reading on Tuesday evening
He tweeted: “Stabbing London Road, Reading, right outside my family home. Hope the victim is ok!”
A third person in the area said a nearby park had also been sealed off by police.
They tweeted: “A4 closed palmer Park incident avoid area believed to be a stabbing!”
And yet a fourth person said: “Another Reading stabbing? Hope he’s ok. Knife crime needs to end ASAP.”

Footage posted on social media shows several police vehicles near police tape which cordoned off a section of the road outside multiple houses.
Another video shows an air ambulance landing in Palmer Park.
The A4 was closed in both direction and traffic was seen queueing near the Sutton Seeds Roundabout.

Local traffic and travel service Inrix said police closed the road at around 6.15pm.
Inrix said: “A4 London Road in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to police incident from A3290 (Sutton Seeds Roundabout, Woodley) to A329 King’s Road (Cemetery Junction, Reading).
“Congestion to Forbury Retail Park.
“The police closed the road around 6.15pm due to the incident, along with St Bartholomew’s Road to Wokingham Road.”
