A Reddit user was left startled after discovering a secret apartment in his attic that resembled the scenes of a horror film.
The decayed house which lay in the attic could be seen crumbling in pictures posted on the website.
Inside the secret apartment, the homeowner found several rooms, a decades-old toilet, a bathroom sink and intact glass windows that have been walled over.
He bravely climbed into the attic and snapped pictures of the creepy property, with the caption “there’s a house in my attic”.
In the post he referred to the flat as “creepy” and described it as being filled with spiders, reports Mirror Online.
He said the two-storey building was originally a store where the owners lived upstairs, but it was turned into a church and “they just built around it”.
The building has since been converted into a private home that is occupied by the Reddit member, whose username is CatchingWindows.
It is believed the property is somewhere in the US.
The Reddit user wrote: “Coz people keep asking, it was a store where the owners lived upstairs.
“I believe someone told me it was Carl’s market.
“But it was turned into a church. I’m guessing the church owners didn’t want to bother with knocking it down so they just built around it.
“When it was converted into a church the second floor was sealed off and a C-shaped addition was added to the ground floor, with a large attic built around the second floor.”
He said he has lived at the property for about two years and, responding to questions from stunned Reddit users, said the attic is “big”.
Inside, he wrote that he found “junk, old cabinet, a tire, a hat, a toilet and sink”.
He added: “Dirt. Lots of dirt. And spiders.
“The only way out of the attic is through a small square hole, so extra scary.”
Someone jokingly asked if the flat was occupied by Pennywise, the clown from Stephen King’s It, and the owner replied: “No I’d guess Satan lives there because it was over 100F [37C] up there.”
He didn’t expect his original post – showing only the creepy-looking door that leads to the upstairs apartment, with white paint peeling off an old exterior wall – would “blow up”.
After it was shared thousands of times, he posted more photos on Imgur.
Pink insulation covers the floor and floral wallpaper is peeling off the walls.
The flat has a number of bedrooms, a bathroom that still has a toilet and a kitchen area.
Fellow Reddit users were creeped out by the photos.
One wrote: “Your attic house looks like a beginning to a horror movie.”
Others wanted to know what the man plans to do with the space.
One person jokingly suggested he turn it into an Airbnb. Another begged for a video tour.
The man wrote: “It would be fun to fix up. I’d have to see if the walls are mouldy and I’m sure all the plumbing and wiring need redoing.”
