Redskins owner Dan Snyder has fought off repeated attempts by outside forces to change his team’s name from an offensive depiction of Indigenous people.
Now, though, he is under financial pressure to make a change.
FedEx, which holds naming rights to FedEx Field, formally asked Snyder on Thursday to change the name. Other main sponsors such as Nike and PepsiCo could follow suit.
“We have communicated to the team in Washington our request that they change the team name,” FedEx wrote to the team in a statement.
The decision by FedEx to push Snyder toward a new name comes amid nationwide protests of racism and police brutality. Institutions around the U.S. have responded by examining their role in systemic racism.
Washington has not yet responded to FedEx’s request.
