Rudy Gobert’s abysmal 2020 continued Saturday night when he shared a Facebook post from a random white woman named Serena Williams thinking it was the 23-time Grand Slam winning tennis star.
The post, shared to Twitter, asked people to mind their own business when it comes to politics and compared those who reject opposing viewpoints to those who are genuinely racists and bigots. It in many ways opposed the messages recently shared by teammates and the Jazz organization asking people to speak out actively against attacks toward to black community even when it means clashing with critics. It was also something the Serena Williams of tennis fame probably wouldn’t write.
Gobert captioned the screenshot of the random person’s post with the message, “Couldn’t have said it better myself!” He later deleted the tweet.
Gobert, of course, infamously made jokes about COVID-19 before contracting the illness and prompting the suspension of the NBA season. He touched every reporter’s recording device in a news conference at a time he might have already had the coronavirus. He also reportedly didn’t take the illness seriously in the Utah locker room, leading to a breakdown of his relationship with teammate Donovan Mitchell.
Mistakenly sharing a post from a woman who has “Nope, not THAT Serena Williams” written in her Facebook bio is the latest blunder in his rough year.
Gobert’s social media gaffe made him the brunt of jokes on Twitter:
