Sadiq Khan attacks Boris for not wearing a face mask… while not wearing a face mask

Sadiq Khan has criticised the Government for failing to make face coverings mandatory in England when entering a shop or a confined space where social distancing is hard to maintain. The London Mayor made the comments while being interviewed in an outdoor seating area of a restaurant – where he was seen not wearing a mask or other form of face covering.

Mr Khan visited Applebee’s Fish restaurant in Borough Market this afternoon, where he was interviewed by an online news outlet.

The London Mayor criticised Boris Johnson and US President Donald Trump for failing to introducing rules on wearing face coverings in their respective counties.

He said: “What I find astounding is from Donald Trump to Boris Johnson they think it’s a sign of virility, or them being super human by not wearing a face mask.

“I think it’s the opposite.

“We have seen the leader of Brazil actually be tested positive for COVID-19.

“Our own Prime Minister who boasted about shaking hands and going about his normal business caught the virus.

“Actually one of the most unselfish things you can do is wear a mask and I actually applaud Nicola Sturgeon for showing leadership in Scotland.

“I have written to the Prime Minister again today saying I think it is important that we follow the evidence, follow the science and make it mandatory to wear a face mask in a shop or in a confined space where you can’t keep to social distancing.

“I cannot understand why they are refusing to do so.”

Another said: “He says. Not wearing a mask…”

A third wrote: “…whilst not wearing a mask himself.”

The London Mayor, and the interviewer, did wear a face mask when they arrived at the restaurant.

Mr Khan also shared a video to his Twitter feed which showed him wearing a black mask as he urged people to wear a face covering when out and about.

The Prime Minister was also spotted wearing a bright blue face mask while visiting local businesses in Uxbridge today.

It comes after Mr Johnson implied wearing face coverings in public places might become a requirement going forward.

During his latest People’s Prime Minister’s Questions, which sees Mr Johnson chat online to members of the public, he said people should wear face coverings in shops.

He said: “Face coverings, we increasingly think we’ve got to be very insistent in confined places where you’re meeting people that you don’t normally come into contact with – transport, shops – wear a face covering.”

The comments mark a big shift in Government advice, after the latest scientific evidence suggested keeping mouths and noses covered will help curb the spread of coronavirus.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “The Mayor believes it is vital that face coverings are worn in enclosed spaces to stop the spread of COVID-19. That’s why he wore his mask when travelling and when inside the restaurant, but was able to remove it when sitting outside since he was able to safely socially distance.”
