Chelsea make offer for Dries Mertens

Chelsea have made an offer for Napoli and Belgium forward Dries Mertens, according to reports in Italy. The 32-year-old is out of contract in the summer and could move to the Premier League.

Corriere dello Sport claim Chelsea are determined to bring Mertens to Stamford Bridge and beat their rivals to his signature.

The reports claim Manchester United and Arsenal are ready to rival Frank Lampard in the race to sign the Napoli ace.

Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte is also keen on Mertens who is the all-time top scorer for his current Serie A side.

Chelsea are desperate to strengthen their side this summer with Olivier Giroud, Pedro and Willian likely to leave the club.

Ed Woodward transfer budget theory

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward reportedly thinks the club will be in a industry-leading position after the coronavirus crisis – which would allow their summer transfer budget to stretch further.

The Red Devils are expecting a big summer ahead at Old Trafford. And the likes of Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Jude Bellingham are all on the club’s radar.

Manchester United have backed Solskjaer on transfers ever since the Norwegian was appointed as Jose Mourinho’s successor.

This summer, United are primed to go big.

They want Sancho, who has been in electric form for Borussia Dortmund scoring 14 goals in the Bundesliga and registering 15 assists along the way.

Grealish is another on their radar, having shone at Aston Villa amid a topsy-turvy campaign under Dean Smith.

And Bellingham is being courted, too, even if Dortmund appear to be in pole position to land the 16-year-old.

Forbes say that Woodward believes that, after the coronavirus crisis, United will be well-placed to secure their top targets.

Chelsea told to keep trio

Chelsea stars Willian, Pedro and Olivier Giroud could all leave the club in the summer but Joe Cole believes Frank Lampard should copy Manchester United and look to keep the trio at the Blues for their experience.

He told The Sun: “Rightly so, we’ve credited the young players at Chelsea because they’ve come through, burst onto the scene and been amazing.

“But Giroud, Willian and Pedro are three top class players who have been really massive for the club, particularly Willian, who’s a club legend, the players and the fans love him.

“I hope they can hang onto that experience – if they want to be part of this new, exciting team that they’re building.

“They can use that experience in the same way that Manchester United hung onto Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary and Phil Neville.

“If they can accept that role where they’re coming in – that they might not play as much as they used to but they’re helping blood an era which could be as good as any era in the club’s history – then there’s a role to play for all of them.

“I think they’re all world class players and it would be tough for any club to replace those three.”

Sadio Mane replacement

It goes without saying that Sadio Mane is a huge part of Liverpool’s plans moving forward, but pundit Kevin Phillips has claimed the Reds may have already signed him replacement.

“Klopp has eased him in gently. That is good management,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“Do not put pressure on the kid straight away and let him get to know the squad.

“Of course, trying to dislodge one of that front-three is hard but he has had some game time.

“He is one of those that Klopp has in place if Sadio Mane was to leave or Firmino.

“Maybe there is a replacement there, but when you have those three at your club you are not getting in front of them.

“You have to be patient. He looks like he has qualities.

“At times he found it difficult to get into the game when he has come on but he looks like a decent. Given time he will be a good one.”

Jadon Sancho to Man Utd latest

Manchester United are determined to complete a transfer for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho this summer.

But the England winger will still cost over £100million despite the coronavirus crisis.

That’s according to University of Liverpool senior teacher and football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

Maguire exclusively told Express Sport: “You’ve got to look at it on a deal by deal basis.

“First of all Manchester United have a strong balance sheet, they had £100m in the bank at the end of December, I appreciate that since then they have signed Bruno Fernandes.

“But even so Manchester United are very successful, they’ve got great commercial revenue generation so I think they are in a strong position to buy then you’ve got to look at the individual position of the clubs that are selling.

“Dortmund, I think will be in a relatively strong position to resist offers, or resist the first offer.”

Timo Werner transfer twist

Liverpool or Chelsea could be a step closer to signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner as the German club are on the verge of signing his replacement, according to reports in Germany.

The Reds have been heavily linked with Werner, who reportedly has a £51million release clause in his contract.

The 24-year-old is having another stunning season for Leipzig and so far this campaign he has scored 27 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions.

However, he could now be on the verge of being allowed to leave the club this summer as according to German publication Weser Kurier, Leipzig are close to signing Werder Bremen striker Milot Rashica.

The 23-year-old is also having a great season and has scored 10 goals and provided five assists in 24 appearances in all competitions this campaign.

This goalscoring form is even more impressive given that Werder Bremen currently sit in the relegation zone in the Bundesliga and are eight points from safety.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang backed to stay at Arsenal

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been backed to stay at the Emirates because living in London as a footballer is “one of the best things ever”, according to Dimitar Berbatov.

“This week there have been lots of rumours surrounding the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, it would be a massive blow for Arsenal if he left the club,” Berbatov wrote in his Betfair column.

“In my opinion they need to do everything possible to stop him from leaving.

“I watched him closely at Dortmund and at Arsenal, and for me he is a great player with his speed, his movement and his goals.

“He is also their captain and a really important player for the team, he is out of contract next year and they should do everything possible to keep him.

“If he wants to leave, it will be difficult for teams to sign him because Arsenal will want a lot of money for him, and of course he is worth it.

“In the current situation teams are looking seriously at their budget and I think it will be hard for clubs to afford him.

“But, I have no doubt that teams will be looking at his situation and taking a lot of interest in it.

“You have to ask if Aubameyang is happy at Arsenal and, if he isn’t, I can understand why.

“Football is about winning trophies and we all know Arsenal are a team that play attractive football but in the end they have been left empty-handed quite a lot of times. That can be frustrating for a player.”
