Sandi Toksvig: 'I’ve overshadowed Meghan and Harry’s royal exit' 1

Sandi shocked fans on Thursday when she announced she was leaving the Channel 4 series after three years. But she made light of it during her stand-up show on Friday, telling the audience: “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be here, I’ve had a bit of a day. It’s amazing what happened. I had this deal with Harry and Meghan. “They were going to go first and quit their jobs and then when I did, literally nobody would notice.” She laughed: “Makes you wonder what I’m doing next… I’m moving to Canada and I’m providing the close protection for Meghan. Sometimes Harry’s busy.”

Sandi, 61 – performing in Poole, Dorset – later joked about joining another reality TV programme.

She said: “Who knows what career path lies ahead? If you see me doing Strictly you know I have a massive tax bill.”

Amid the gags on Friday, she gave an insight into the reason she quit Bake Off – she recently suffered a bereavement. She said: “The truth is we might as well crack on with our lives and live them to the full because, mostly, when we die is not up to us.

“Considering how precious and fantastic life is it’s amazing how much time we spend on our phones a day. No matter who you are, no matter how powerful you are… everybody ends up dead.

“The fact is we are all going to the same place and it makes me wonder why we spend so much time worrying what others think.”

Sandi will be seen co-hosting one more series with Noel Fielding when The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer is broadcast on Channel 4 this spring. The star, host of BBC Two’s QI, is also a mother of three, and has a tattoo of her children’s initials in ancient runes on her hand.

She told the Poole audience: “They are Viking runes, they are the initials of my children so when I am doing QI and I have got the cue cards like this I see my babies right there.

“We should all reconsider what it is we truly value. The time that we have whizzes by so we need to make the most of every moment.

“The fact is I’m in that very sad place where I’ve lost somebody really close to me fairly recently and if you are in that position my heart absolutely goes out to you.”
