Former NBA player Stephen Jackson is still mourning the loss of his “twin” and close friend George Floyd, who died in Minneapolis police custody.
Floyd’s death has started protests across the country, and Jackson has become a prominent voice standing alongside Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter Gianna and her mother, Roxie Washington. Washington made her first public comments Tuesday evening to mourn the loss of Floyd.
“I don’t have a lot to say, because I can’t get my words together right now. But I wanted everybody to know that this is what those officers took. At the end of the day, they get to go home and be with their families. Gianna does not have a father,” Washington said. “He will never see her grow up, graduate. He will never walk her down the aisle. If there’s a problem she’s having and she needs her dad, she does not have that anymore.”

After hearing Washington’s words, Jackson stepped up and said he’d fill that void as best he can.
“There’s a lot of stuff you said that he’s gonna miss — that I’m gonna be there for,” Jackson said. “I’m gonna walk her down the aisle. I’m gonna be there for her. I’m gonna be here to wipe your tears. I’m gonna be here for you and Gigi. Floyd might not be here, but I’m here for her, I’m here to get justice, and we’re gonna get justice for my brother.”

In addition to his promise to remain in Gianna’s life, he also promised to continue to seek justice for George Floyd.
“We’re not leaving, we’re gonna keep fighting, we’re gonna send him home in beautiful ways this week,” Jackson said. “But I’m telling you: We are not leaving, we are gonna demand justice.”
Jackson urged people on Instagram to donate to the Gianna Floyd Fund on GoFundMe, which has raised more than $ 600,000 as of this writing.
A video of Jackson with Gianna on his shoulders went viral Tuesday night as it featured Floyd’s daughter saying, “Daddy changed the world.”
