Sturgeon confirms no new COVID deaths for SECOND day but warns of ‘reckless’ behaviour

Nicola Sturgeon welcomed news of no new coronavirus deaths for the second day as she insisted Scots must continue to beware of the deadly virus. The First Minister did warn the number of reported new cases and deaths suffered a delay during the weekend and said the figure could later be updated. But Ms Sturgeon announced the progress made in the past few weeks has given the confidence to the Scottish Government for further relaxations of the lockdown.

However, the SNP leader insisted Scotland will have to remain vigilant and avoid “reckless” behaviour to ensure a second wave does not happen.

In her daily update to the press, Ms Sturgeon said: “We must remember, all of us, that the virus hasn’t gone away.

“There are already countries like China and Germany that are right now dealing with spikes in cases as a result of significant outbreaks. And health officials in South Korea have today said they think they are experiencing a second wave.

“I know that when number of cases and deaths here are continuing to fall it’s very tempting to think it’s all over and we should now quickly get back to normal.

“We are trying to get back to normal and we want to do that as quickly as possible.”

She added: “Let me reiterate my belief that acting recklessly now would be a serious mistake.

“W must continue to be cautious and all of us must continue to adhere strictly to the health advice.

“That will help us continue to progress and avoid a resurgence of the virus now. But it will also, hopefully, put us in a much stronger position ahead of the winter months to come.

“So stick to the rule as you are out and about.”

The First Minister also announced the Government will issue further clarification on the next phase of relaxation of the lockdown measures.

Ms Sturgeon announced Scotland would enter the second phase of the easing last week, with some shops and activities allowed to reopen from today.

The SNP leader also urged Scots to ensure they wear face masks and covering when travelling on public transport.

Last week, Ms Sturgeon also announced a new public awareness campaign called Facts.

She said: “Each letter of that word Facts should serve to remind us all of the key measures we need to comply with.”

The acronym Facts stands for: Face coverings in enclosed spaces, Avoid crowded spaces, Clean your hands and surfaces regularly, Two-metre distancing, Self-isolate and book a test if you have symptoms.

So remember these Facts and that will help all of us stay safe and it will ensure all of us can help protect each other as well.”
