Susanna Reid quizzes Matt Hancock on new coronavirus vaccine

Susanna Reid, 49, has admitted that working on her ITV documentary Death Row’s Women that saw her come face to face with child murderer Darlie Routier in a Texas prison, was difficult as she “quietly missed” her boys. The GMB host shared that it was tough to sit opposite a woman who had “killed her offspring” and she even began to feel “nauseous” about the situation.

The most unnatural thing in the world

Susanna shared: “Darlie isn’t the first murderer I’ve faced, but interacting with a mother who has done the most unnatural thing in the world is one of the most emotionally challenging situations I’ve ever been in for work.

“And the case is far from clear cut.

“Now 50, Darlie has always protested her innocence — and there are many who support her assertions that an intruder killed her sons.

“They range from her ex-husband and surviving son, now 25, to the friends who say she has been wrongly painted as a sadistic killer and the experienced appeals lawyer who says no one will ever convince him of her guilt,” she added.

Darlie is currently awaiting lethal injection after spending 22 years on Death Row in Texas’s Department Of Corrections in Gatesville.

Susanna admitted that seeing the convicted murder’s tears was difficult for her to take in, as she felt herself as a mother become emotional.

The GMB host explained in her Daily Mail column: “There are times when Darlie breaks down in front of me, crying about the sight of her slain sons, and I feel the tears stinging my own eyes.

“Times when I have to remind myself that my instinctive maternal empathy does not mean she’s an innocent woman.”

Susanna shared that the prospect of an innocent person being sentenced to death by accident is why she is firmly against the death penalty.

Of Darlie’s case, the star said that there is “reasonable doubt” that perhaps she may not have murdered her two children, Damon (5) and Devon (6).

The murders took place on June 6 1996, when Darlie was just 26 years old.

Her youngest child Drake slept upstairs with her husband, while Darlie tried to get some shuteye downstairs in the lounge of their Dallas home.

During the night, Devon was stabbed repeatedly in the chest and Damon was stabbed in the back, while Darlie herself suffered stab wounds in her arm.

Devon died immediately at the scene while his younger brother died in hospital.

Darlie told police at the time that an intruder had broken into their home through the utility window while the family slept.

The convicted murderer told Susanna: “I could see Devon lying there, his eyes were open.

“He wasn’t moving. I remember going over to Damon.

“He was lying on his back and I could see he’d been stabbed in the back.

“I lifted up his shirt and I put towels on him and I kept telling him, ‘Hang on, baby, hang on.'”

Death Row’s Women With Susanna Reid is at 9pm next Thursday on ITV.
