Germany Olympics team walk off after alleged racist abuse

Germany’s men’s Olympics football team left the pitch five minutes before the end of a warm-up match against Honduras after one of their players was allegedly racially abused.

The team faced Honduras in preparation for the 2020 Olympics, which begin next week.

The teams were tied at 1-1, with Germany equalising thanks to a goal from Felix Uduokhai.

The players walked off the field with five minutes left to play, with the team’s Twitter account claiming that the players decided to leave because defender Jordan Torunarigha had been racially insulted.

Prince Charles sparks new royal family feud after petty move alleged against his brother Edward

Lifestyle

Prince Charles has refused to give his youngest brother Edward the title of Duke of Edinburgh following their father Prince Philip’s death, it’s been claimed.

Edward, Earl of Wessex, has been waiting more than 20 years to take up the title – but apparently Charles isn’t so keen on the idea, reports The Sun.

According to royal tradition, the title of the Duke of Edinburgh passed directly to Charles as eldest son following Philip’s death in April.

But it’s long been expected that the title would pass to Edward. Buckingham Palace announced in 1999 that Edward would take up the dukedom “in due course”, with a blessing from the Queen and Philip himself.

Following his marriage to Sophie Rhys-Jones that year, Queen Elizabeth granted him the title of Earl of Wessex, which he chose himself.

But now Charles is reportedly considering whether to break that promise as he rethinks his own future, reports the Sunday Times.

A source close to Prince Charles told the outlet, “The prince is the Duke of Edinburgh as it stands, and it is up to him what happens to the title. It will not go to Edward.”

Another claimed the title wouldn’t go to the Wessexes as far as Charles was concerned.

The title of Duke of Edinburgh would merge with the crown when Charles gains the throne, meaning the new monarch will be able to give Edward the title.

It means Charles is left with the decision of whether to give the title to Edward, to another family member, or to leave it in abeyance.

Heraldry adviser to the royal family David White told the Sunday Times there was no urgent need for Charles to give Edward the title on his accession to the throne.

“George VI was the Duke of York and when he became king, the dukedom merged with the Crown. It wasn’t granted again until Prince Andrew became Duke of York,” he pointed out.

The Queen granted Prince Andrew the dukedom after his marriage to Sarah Ferguson in 1986.

Edward is reportedly aware of the uncertainty surrounding the title. He was asked in an interview with the BBC last month, “You will be the next Duke of Edinburgh, when the Prince of Wales becomes king, that is quite something to take on?”

He replied that it was “fine in theory”.

“Of course it will depend on whether or not the Prince of Wales, when he becomes king, whether he’ll do that, so we’ll wait and see. So yes, it will be quite a challenge taking that on.”

He noted that the granting of the title was “bittersweet” as it could only come to him after both his parents had passed away. He’s already taken up a few of his father’s patronages.

He’s a trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme as well as a patron of the Edinburgh International Festival.

Prince Philip was granted the title of Duke of Edinburgh on the day of his marriage to Queen Elizabeth, November 20, 1947.

He was president, patron or member of more than 780 organisations.

When contacted by the Sunday Times, Clarence House spokesperson would not comment on matters related to the accession.

Buckingham Palace also declined to comment to the newspaper.

MLS looks into alleged racial abuse toward Timbers player

Coach Giovanni Savarese said after the team’s game Friday an opposing player directed a “discriminatory word” at Timbers midfielder Diego Chara.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Editors Note: The video in the player above is from a story that aired in April 2021.

Major League Soccer is investigating allegations of racial abuse directed at Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Chara.

Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese said after Portland’s 1-0 loss to Minnesota United Saturday night that a “discriminatory word” had been used by a Loons player toward Chara, who is Black and from Colombia.

“MLS has zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language, and we take these allegations very seriously. An investigation into this matter has already begun. Further information will be provided upon completion of that investigation,” the league said in a statement Sunday.

Minnesota United released a statement saying the team supports the league’s investigation. But it also said the Loons player involved, who was not identified, denied making “any derogatory remarks.”

“MNUFC is built on inclusivity and respect, and does not tolerate discrimination under any circumstance,” the statement said.

Minnesota coach Adrian Heath spoke to the media following the game, but it was before Savarese mentioned the comment directed at Chara.

“We are all in support of Diego Chara. But what happened to him today, the discriminatory word that was said to him, should not have a place anywhere,” Savarese said, visibly angry. “I’m extremely disappointed that it was not taken as serious as it should have been.”

The game was delayed several minutes on the field in the second half, and it was apparent that the Portland players were angry and appealing to game referees. But it was not clear what was said or when it occurred.

The Professional Referee Organization, which manages the officiating crews for Major League Soccer matches, issued a statement explaining that no immediate disciplinary action was made because the referee did not witness or hear the alleged abuse.

“The referee then went a step further to inform captains of both teams that he was aware of the allegation, could not issue a sanction, but would be including the incident in his official match report to initiative further investigation,” PRO said in a statement Sunday. “In this instance, the referee acted appropriately in accordance with the annual diversity and anti-discrimination training protocols, which all PRO match officials are required to participate in each season to effectively identify and respond to discrimination of any kind during competition.”

The incident marred Minnesota’s victory, which extended the team’s undefeated streak to six straight games. It was the Loons’ first win on the road this season.

The match was pushed back for an hour because of a heat wave in the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures were still above 100 degrees when the game kicked off after 8:30 p.m. The high temperature in downtown Portland on Saturday reached a record-breaking 106 degrees.

3 Ascension Texas hospitals to pay $20.9 million in fines for alleged kickbacks

AUSTIN (Texas Tribune) — Texas state officials, including those in Gov. Greg Abbott’s office, knew for months that foster children were being illegally housed in an emergency shelter cited hundreds of times for dangerous conditions — but failed to report the violation to court-appointed watchdogs tasked with monitoring the state’s foster care system, according to court records.

The Whataburger Center, a shelter for foster children in San Antonio named after the restaurant chain because of a one-time donation, was cited 239 times for not meeting state minimum standards between 2016 and 2020. Some of the reports identified abuse or neglect. In September, the shelter was put on probation by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and placed on an admissions hold — blocking children from being housed there — after the department said it found “a continued pattern of deficiencies in the area of supervision, medication, and reports/record keeping.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic ‘facing three year ban’ over alleged ties to sports gambling website – reports

Author: RT
This post originally appeared on RT Sport News

Veteran AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic is understood to be under investigation by UEFA due to an alleged ‘financial interest’ in a sports betting company which may be in breach of their financial regulations.

Sweden legend Ibrahimovic, who recently signed a new deal to keep him at the Serie A club into his 40s, is said to have landed in the crosshairs of European football’s governing body, who have reportedly appointed an official to probe whether the striker has breached regulations.

A company owned by Ibrahimovic, Unknown AB, is understood to own a 10 per cent stake in Maltese-based gambling website Bethard, with UEFA examining whether that alleged connection is in violation of their rules.

Both UEFA and FIFA forbid players from having financial interests in gambling firms, with those who violate the regulations subject to a possible ban of three years – and Swedish media have reported that Ibrahimovic could potentially be liable for such a punishment.

In accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR), a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has today been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential violation of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations by Mr Zlatan Ibrahimovic for having an alleged financial interest in a betting company,” read a UEFA statement issued on Monday.

The UEFA Executive Committee, the UEFA President, the UEFA General Secretary and the disciplinary bodies may commission ethics and disciplinary inspectors to conduct investigations, either alone or in co-operation with other UEFA or non-UEFA bodies.”

News of the upcoming stare-down with European football chiefs comes amid a purple patch in the iconic striker’s career. He has scored an impressive 15 goals in just 17 games in Serie A this season, which has taken his career tally past the 500 mark.

His one-year contract extension at the San Siro was seen as a reward for his good form – and it is unclear whether any conflict with footballing authorities will impact his future in Serie A.

Ibrahimovic is expected to feature for Sweden in this summer’s European Championships after coming out of international retirement earlier this year, in which he will be hoping to add to his impressive international record of 63 goals in 118 appearances.

‘A disgusting excuse for a human being’: Outrage over alleged animal abuse as footballer is accused of giving kitten brain damage

A Tennessee Vols linebacker prospect has been accused of abusing a kitten so badly that the animal suffered injuries including brain damage, with a funding page leading to an outraged public response and furious condemnation.

The heinous alleged incident is said to have occurred at the weekend, when college football star Aaron Beasley is said to have set about the six-month old pet.

In a Go Fund Me post titled ‘Help Nugget Get Healthy’, his owner, Kaylee Scarborough, has writteN: “I have been in the process of moving and I came home this morning to find my six-month old kitten under a dresser hiding and not letting anyone touch him.”

“When I picked him up he screamed and couldn’t walk, [and I] come to find out my roommate’s boyfriend [Beasley] had hit and kicked him, locked him in the toilet bowl and held him upside down by his tail.”

“We rushed Nugget to the emergency room and he has brain damage and will now have a hard time walking.

“He has a bleeding hemorrhage on his kidney caused from internal bleeding from being kicked, clots in his bladder and he is currently in an oxygen tank,” Scarborough continued.

“My heart is absolutely broken for him and I just want my baby to be okay and to stop animal cruelty.

“I think it’s ridiculous I am having to make this [plea] but this is what it has come to. Any support in any way will help.”

Local police confirmed to Tennessee media outlet WBIR that an investigation has been opened into Beasley’s conduct following a complaint from a female student at their university. No charges have been processed.

A fierce backlash has broken out online, with one Twitter user calling Beasley a “disgusting excuse for a human”.

“I pray he is prosecuted to the fullest extent,” she continued, while tagging his coach and Director of Athletics.

“This isn’t just a drug charge and I’m not going to text a buddy. If you don’t do something, it sets the tone for your characte,  too,” she warned them.

“If Aaron Beasley really kicked a helpless kitten he needs to go,” wrote another reader, receiving a reply from the owner’s mother alleging that the “jock” had caused $ 2,500 worth of damage.

The fundraising page quickly raised more than $ 4,500 in pledges.

‘It puts you under stress’: Russian Premier League player in alleged betting case insists lie detector test would be ‘pointless’

Russian Premier League newcomer Aleksandr Yerkin, who is one of two Tambov players to have reportedly been summoned by national football bosses as part of a betting investigation, has detailed why a polygraph is not to be trusted.

Less than a month after making his top-flight debut against Dynamo Moscow, 31-year-old Yerkin and Belarusian midfielder Dmitry Herman were questioned by Russian Football Union chiefs in a development that was said to have been confirmed by his club.

Yerkin, Herman and Tambov have always maintained their innocence and have not been charged with any wrongdoing, although the pair have been suspended from training for almost a fortnight in a move that the club said was designed to protect it from “rumors” and “negativity”.

Asked by Match TV about using a lie detector to provide his innocence, Yerkin argued: “[The body] can react differently to such a technique.

“The equipment reads pulses from sensors… heartbeats and emotions, and I suffer from stress.

“Imagine if I sat down [to] a polygraph, telling the truth, and it’s showing [I’m telling] a lie. Who will I prove [my innocence] to after that?”

“[I have] read about the detector [and] realized that it is pointless to trust this device. If you have any evidence [of my wrongdoing], provide it.

“Why would you want to put me through a polygraph, under the stress it puts you through?”

Tambov have described their position as “quite simple.” “At the moment, we do not see any legal grounds that show the guilt of our players,” they said.

“We don’t believe that the players are involved in any manipulations. Nevertheless, in order to protect the team from negativity and all sorts of rumors, the club management and coaching staff have made a joint decision to suspend Dmitry Herman and Alexander Yerkin from training until the end of the proceedings on this issue.”

A veteran of at least 11 clubs who has had spells in Lithuania, Yerkin made two appearances for Tambov following his arrival last month, playing a total of 35 minutes as a substitute in the 2-0 defeat at Dynamo and a 4-0 loss at home to Krasnodar.

The Premier League’s bottom side are currently on a dreadful 13-match winless run that has seen them lose 11 times since their most recent victory, which came last October.

Scandal in Spain: Both sets of players walk off the pitch as LaLiga football match is halted after alleged racist remark (VIDEO)

Top-flight Spanish side Valencia and ex-Manchester United Champions League winner Rio Ferdinand have been among those to back Mouctar Diakhaby after the enraged star was at the center of an extraordinary incident during a match.

Both sets of players left the pitch with little more than half an hour gone after visiting defender Diakhaby appeared to furiously accuse Cala, who had opened the scoring for hosts Cadiz, of making a racist remark.

The French defender had to be restrained by players from both sides before speaking to the referee and heading back down the tunnel, to be joined shortly afterwards by the rest of his teammates and opponents.

After a brief deliberation, Valencia posted an anti-racism message on their social media channels and announced that they would be returning to the pitch “in order to fight for the honour of the club”, emphasizing that they “denounce racism of any kind”.

With the score at 1-1 by then, Diakhaby was substituted for Hugo Guillamon, while Cala stayed on the pitch.

Six-time English Premier League winner Ferdinand later predicted that the walk-off would embolden teams to take similar action after alleged racist clashes, while Valencia later reiterated their backing for Diakhaby.

“The player, who had received a racial insult, requested that his teammates return to the pitch,” they declared. “We support you, Mouctar. No to racism.”

Cala was substituted at the start of the second half before Cadiz went on to win 2-1 courtesy of an 88th-minute winner at the Estadio Ramon de Carranza.

Matt Gaetz: 5 Things To Know About GOP Rep. Under Investigation By FBI For Alleged Sex Trafficking

Rep. Matt Gaetz is under investigation by the FBI for allegations of sex with a minor and sex trafficking. Here’s what you need to know about the investigation, and the Florida Rep. himself.

The FBI has announced an investigation into Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz over allegations that the Republican, 38, slept with a 17-year-old girl and paid for her travel two years ago, The New York Times[1] first reported on March 31. The age of sexual consent in Florida is 18. The Department of Justice is investigating whether Gaetz, a GOP firebrand and close Donald Trump[2] ally, has violated sex trafficking laws. The third-term congressman has not been charged with anything at this time, and says he is cooperating with the investigation.

Gaetz fervently denied all allegations in a statement — and then some. In what Fox News’ Tucker Carlson called his “weirdest interview ever,” Gaetz claimed on March 30 that the allegations are part of an ongoing effort to extort him and his family. “Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $ 25 million while threatening to smear my name… I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicate their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations,” he said.

He claimed that his father, former president of the Florida state Senate Donald Gaetz, “has even been wearing a wire at the FBI’s direction to catch these criminals.” The former DOJ official Gaetz named is attorney David McGee, who denied any involvement in the investigation or attempts to exort the family to The Washington Post[5]. McGee confirmed that Donald Gaetz had reached out to him to discuss a subject he declined to disclose.

“I have not had a relationship with a 17-year-old,” Gaetz said in his Tucker Carlson Tonight interview. “That is totally false. The allegation is, I read it in the New York Times, is that I’ve traveled with some 17-year-old in some relationship. That is false, and records will bear that out to be false. Providing for flights and hotel rooms for people that you’re dating who are of legal age is not a crime… People were talking about a minor and that there were pictures of me with child prostitutes. That’s obviously false. There will be no such pictures, because no such thing happened.”

Gaetz reportedly gained a reputation when he arrived at Congress in 2017 for bragging about his sexual exploits, multiple sources told CNN[6]. The sources claim that Gatz allegedly showed photos and videos of nude women he slept with, which he kept on his phone, to other lawmakers (including on the House floor). The sources, allegedly including two people shown the explicit material, told CNN that Gaetz described having sex with the women, as well. It is unclear if these pictures and video are connected to the DOJ investigation.

Gaetz could be charged under the Mann Act[7], which prohibits bringing anyone across state lines “with intent that such individual engage in prostitution, or in any sexual activity for which any person can be charged with a criminal offense.” The investigation opened in 2020 under President Trump’s administration. Gaetz told Axios[8], “The allegations against me are as searing as they are false. I believe that there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to criminalize my sexual conduct, you know when I was a single guy.”

Here’s what else you need to know about Gaetz:

1. Gaetz Is Also Being Investigated For Paying Women Online For Sex

The DOJ’s investigation is focused on Gaetz’s alleged involvement with “multiple women who were recruited online for sex and received cash payments,” The New York Times[9] reported on April 1. Investigators believe that Joel Greenberg, a former tax collector in Florida who was indicted in 2020 on a federal sex trafficking charge, met the women in question on websites where women go on dates in exchange for gifts and money, according to sources who spoke with the paper. Investigators claim Greenberg introduced the women to Gaetz, who allegedly had sex with them. Gaetz has denied ever paying a woman for sex.

The New York Times claims they reviewed receipts from Cash App and Apple Pay that show money sent to one of the women by Gaetz and Greenberg, and from Greenberg to another woman. Gaetz and Greenberg allegedly told women to meet them at hotels and other locations in Florida throughout 2019 and 2020. One woman told the paper that Gaetz and Greenberg also sometimes paid her in cash.

2. Gaetz Is One Of Congress’ Most Controversial Reps.

The hard right Republican’s attention-seeking antics include wearing a gas mask on the floor of the House in March 2020. He mocked what he believed was an overreaction to the growing COVID-19 pandemic during a hearing about funding the public health battle. He remained a staunch anti-masker during the deadly coronavirus[10] outbreak, and ending up testing positive for the antibodies on Nov. 3, 2020.

Gaetz incorrectly claimed that it was Antifa members and not all Trump supporters who laid siege on the U.S. Capitol[11] on Jan. 6, 2021. He declared, “Some of the people who breached the Capitol today were not Trump supporters. They were masquerading as Trump supporters and in fact, were members of the violent terrorist group Antifa,” to rounds of “boo’s”[12] during a speech on the House floor early the following morning. Gaetz was flagged by Twitter for “glorifying violence” following an outrageous June 1, 2020 tweet amid the nationwide George Floyd[13] police protests by writing, “Now that we clearly see Antifa as terrorists, can we hunt them down like we do those in the Middle East?”

Gaetz has represented Florida’s 1st congressional district since 2016, and has been reelected twice since. He is a member of the House Freedom Caucus and sits on the following committees: Committee on Armed Services, Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces, Committee on the Budget, Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet, Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law. He has not been removed from any committees since news broke of his DOJ investigation.

3. He Voted No On A Bill Combatting Human Trafficking

Gaetz was the only Rep. who voted “no” on the Combating Human Trafficking in Commercial Vehicles Act in 2017. The bill allocates additional government resources to combat human trafficking in the United States. Gaetz said on Facebook Live[14] that he opposed the bill because it represented “mission creep” of federal government. “Unless there is an overwhelming, compelling reason that our existing agencies in the federal government can’t handle that problem, I vote no because voters in Northwest Florida did not send me to Washington to go and create more federal government,” Gaetz said.

4. He’s A Staunch Supporter Of Donald Trump

Gaetz has alienated himself from Congressional colleagues for his fervent Trump support. Throughout Trump’s presidency, Gaetz was constantly featured on Fox News and OAN parroting Trump’s rhetoric. When Trump called Haiti a “sh*thole country”[15] in 2018, Gaetz backed him up by tweeting, “The conditions in Haiti are deplorable, they are disgusting. I mean, everywhere you look in Haiti, it’s sheet metal and garbage.” Gaetz was so loyal to Trump that he even said he’d resign[16] his House seat to represent Trump in his second impeachment trial if asked to join his legal team.

5. Gaetz Is Part Of The #FreeBritney Movement

Britney Spears[17] found a very unlikely ally in Gaetz. The congressman asked in March that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) host a televised inquiry into the due process of conservatorships, and specifically mentioned the “Toxic” singer in his letter. In his letter, Gaetz brought up many points of contention that appeared in the documentary Framing Britney Spears[18], including how her father came about having control — and keeping it — over Britney’s life via the conservatorship[19].

“The facts and circumstancing giving rise to this arrangement remain in dispute but involve questionable motives and legal tactics by her father and now-conservator, Jamie Spears,” he wrote. Gaetz later tweeted[20] on Mar. 9 that “I think @britneyspears would be a great witness in the House Judiciary Committee. She would likely have a lot to say on conservatorships. #FreeBritney”
