Andrea Yates: 20 years since the tragedy that shocked the nation

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — It was a tragedy that saddened the nation and brought postpartum illness into the spotlight. On June 20, 2001, Andrea Yates drowned her five small children one by one in the bathtub of her Clear Lake home.

Yates, who is now 56, was tried twice for the deaths of her children.

In 2002, she was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison. Her conviction was later overturned based on false testimony.

A second trial in 2006 resulted in a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Yates was sent to Kerrville State Hospital, a mental health facility, where she remains today. She has now spent a third of her life institutionalized.

Twenty years after the tragedy, ABC13’s Jessica Willey is hearing from those who saw the case unfold in the ABC13 Original “Andrea Yates: 20 Years Later”.

Yates’ former attorney and friend George Parnham shares how the case changed his career and gives a glimpse into her life now. Former paramedic John Delbosque also talks about why he will never forget that dark day, and Joe Owmby, lead prosecutor in both of Yates’ trials, discusses the testimony that led to her murder conviction being overturned.

“She’s where she wants to be. Where she needs to be,” said Parnham. “And I mean, hypothetically, where would she go? What would she do?”

Yates, a former nurse, called 911 for help after she drowned her children. She laid out John, 5, Paul, 3, Luke, 2 and 6-month-old Mary in the bed. Noah, 7, was still in the bathtub.

“He was face down and kind of bobbing in the water, and that’s when I realized she drowned them,” said Delbosque.

Delbosque has never spoken publicly about that day.

“I’d say it was my worst call,” he said.

In interviews with HPD, the 36-year-old said she killed the children because she was not a good mother. Yates also told a Harris County psychiatrist she wanted to save them from Satan.

Her husband, Russell “Rusty” Yates was at work at NASA when the drowning happened. Despite losing all of his children, he stood by her.

“She loved those kids,” Rusty said to a throng of media in 2001.

Yates had attempted suicide twice, was admitted to psychiatric hospitals and treated for postpartum depression and psychosis before the drownings. A doctor warned the couple about having more children, in light of Andrea’s illness. However, Mary was born in November 2000.

In 2005, an appeals court overturned the conviction based on false testimony by one of the state’s expert witnesses.

Dr. Park Dietz testified that Yates got the idea about drowning her children from an episode of Law & Order, however no such episode existed.

Owmby said he and his team were blindsided by the testimony but did not expect it to have such a great impact.

There was a new trial in 2006 with a very different outcome.

“Thank goodness Dr. Dietz did what he did,” said Parnham.

For 14 years, Kerrville State Hospital has been Yates’s home. Parnham said he thinks of her like a daughter and still talks to her often. She comes up for review for release every year and waives it every single time.

At 80 years old, Parnham is still practicing law. He said Andrea’s case has changed how people view mental illness, especially when it comes to the law.

As he reflects on the last 20 years, his only wish for Yates is that she is comfortable. He said she is happy and still remembers her first words to him.

“She said, ‘Please don’t leave me alone,’ and I haven’t at all,” he said.

Andrea Bocelli sings beautiful rendition of Melodramma accompanied by cellist WATCH

Andrea Bocelli has been captured in a new music video giving a stunning live performance of Melodramma. The Italian tenor was singing from inside the Teatro Del Silenzio alongside Stjepan Hauser. Also known simply as HAUSER, the Croatian cellist is a member of 2CELLOS, while Melodramma was the lead single on Andrea’s 2001 album Cieli di Toscana.
Melodramma was written by Pierpaolo Guerrini and Paolo Luciani and the track was later included on Andrea’s 2007 greatest hits album.

Earlier this week, the 62-year-old and HAUSER were captured performing Time To Say Goodbye together in the same spot.

The iconic song is one of the best-selling singles of all time with over 12 million copies sold worldwide.

Fans will know the Teatro Del Silenzio is an open-air amphitheatre that hosts Andrea Bocelli‘s own concert every July.

The venue’s name translates as Theatre of Silence as usually, the structure remains quiet for the rest of the year, although these performances with HAUSER seem to be an exception.

The cellist posted the Time To Say Goodbye clip on his Instagram page, praising Andrea.

He wrote: “My dear Maestro Andrea Bocelli, one of the purest souls in this world, I’m beyond grateful for your hospitality and honoured to feel like a part of your extraordinary family.

“The song says it’s Time To Say Goodbye but I say this is start of something new!”

Earlier this month, Andrea shared a beautiful tribute song video to his mother Edi Bocelli, who rejected advice from doctors to abort her son over concerns he would be born disabled.

From his birth, the future opera singer had problems with his sight and was later diagnosed with congenital glaucoma, before going completely blind aged 12 after a football match accident.

Edi’s decision to not terminate her pregnancy with him has inspired Andrea’s own pro-life views.

Sharing a lyrics video for the song Mamma, the Italian tenor captioned it: “The first word we learn how to say, the first sound to mean something as if we see in her the heart and the secret of life itself from the start of our earthly adventure: mom!”

Andrea added: “She who, through divine grace, lives the generous mystery of birth, the sacred plan of giving shape and consciousness to clay.

“She, force and breath of the world, the most powerful messenger of Heaven, who teaches us what love is and what it is like. I’m thinking of my mother and affectionately of all mothers, of their unbreakable strength.

“I thank each of them and celebrate the natural setting where motherhood thrives: the family, where we learn and teach the young to choose the path of good. Celebrating Mother’s Day means celebrating life: today especially, but not only today, because mothers deserve it every day of the year. Andrea.”

Ronaldo to the rescue: Portugal superstar saves Andrea Pirlo and Juventus with late brace to keep Champions League chase alive

On the day their rivals Inter were crowned champions, Cristiano Ronaldo kept Juventus’ hopes of finishing in the top four alive by sinking Udinese with a late double that could have saved under-pressure manager Andrea Pirlo’s job.

Reports before kick off claimed that Pirlo could be fired if he failed to win at the Stadio Friuli, and Nahuel Molina’s goal after 10 minutes threatened to derail the visitors’ quest for a consolatory Champions League place, as well as the 2006 World Cup legend prospects of seeking a new employer by the turn of the week.

Argentina international Rodrigo De Paul caught the Old Lady napping with a quick free-kick which sent compatriot Molina down the right flank, unleashing a vicious strike that sneaked past Wojciech Szczesny despite the Poland goalkeeper managed to apply a touch to it.

Taking their lead down the tunnel at half time, Udinese started strongly again after the interval with Tolgay Arslan hitting just wide.

When Ronaldo had a weak attempt smothered easily, Juventus looked as though they might never find a way through.

But the Serie A top scorer always does, with De Paul going from assist hero to zero by putting an elbow on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s free-kick in the box.

After CR7 smashed the resulting penalty past Simone Scuffet, who was starting his first game for Udinese since 2018, the visitors went for the jugular.

In the 89th minute, Ronaldo met an Adrien Rabiot cross at the back post and headed in to trigger a passionate sprint from Pirlo down the touchline in celebration, as Juve finished 2-1 winners, leaving them joint second with Atalanta and AC Milan.

“This victory arrived with determination and fight. We once again made life complicated for ourselves but we wanted to bring home the result right to the end and that’s what is important,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was particularly crucial considering the results from this afternoon. This is a group that’s strong: it wants to fight for its targets and we never lacked that.

“Sometimes the attitude during the game was not worthy of Juventus, but the final embrace was a show of our unity. Now we need to continue with this spirit.

“I thought it’d be a bit less stressful and emotional, but when you win games like this at the end, it gives you the energy to keep going.”

“There’s fatigue, both physical and mental, so when you’re used to challenging for the [Italian title] Scudetto and not the Champions League, something changes. We have adapted – it’s a struggle, but we need to get there.”

Pirlo gave credit where it was due to his former manager, Antonio Conte.“I congratulate Inter and the boss for this deserved title,” he said, discussing the runaway leaders who have won the league with four matches to spare.

“Now we need to change because we want to be the champions again. One era ends after [Juve won] nine consecutive Scudetti – another will now begin and we aim to be back there.”

Udinese director Pierpaolo Marino was less cordial, alleging that Juventus chief Fabio Paratici tried to “intimidate” and “influence” the referee.

“I am angry because my team put in a great performance and I am here to protect their hard work,” he raged.

“The Ronaldo free-kick that led to the penalty should’ve been a free kick in Udinese’s favor instead.

“I am a veteran of football, so I’ve seen before those who cling to complaining over the lack of first-half stoppages to intimidate the referee.

“Then after that, the referee can give a penalty for a free kick that was non-existent. It’s [Juventus winger] Juan Cuadrado who fouls [defender] Jens Stryger-Larsen, not the other way round.

“It was a blatant error and cannot be ignored. I believe the referee was influenced by this verbal assault at half-time by the Juve directors, staff, coaches and players.

“The way they were behaving, it was as if they’d lost because there weren’t 40 seconds of stoppages.

“This sort of thing belongs to football of another era. I spoke out against it then and I’ll speak out against it now.”

Andrea Bocelli’s son Matteo Bocelli on his ‘incredible project’ arriving in 2022

Andrea Bocelli’s son Matteo Bocelli is gearing up to release his first solo album and continues to tease fans with his upcoming plans. Most recently, the 23-year-old performed Fall On Me with his father in the ancient city of Hegra in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. The father, son and their family have been enjoying spending some time in the area, speeding around in dune buggies and horse riding.

Now Matteo has posted a picture of himself riding a horse on his Instagram account.

The rising star captioned it: “Getting my gallop on! There’s no thrill like it.

“I had the pleasure of rediscovering horse riding recently for an incredible project.

“I can’t wait for you all to see it next year…” Just what could he be up to?

The AlUla concert marked the first time Andrea has performed live with both Matteo and Virginia in the same show.

Writing on his own Instagram account, the 62-year-old wrote: “I leave AI-Ula with a wealth of memories and emotions that no suitcase can contain.

“I carry with me the yearning to return to sing in the Middle East as soon as possible, a nostalgia for the deep silences I experienced in the desert, for the crystalline air I breathed there.

“I leave with the giddiness of the story that the stones of that archaeological paradise tell, as well as the privilege of having been able to touch them, ideally, with my singing.”

Andrea added: “Finally, I leave with a great and private gift that, until recently, I had considered unattainable…

“For the first time, three Bocellis sang on stage together with their own voices: Virginia and Matteo, alongside their dad. Family is music in itself, it is the score that restores life’s harmony.

“My family is my strength, and it was so sweet to have them beside me in the enchantment of AI-Ula, a place that speaks to the heart and bears witness to a much larger family, of which we are all part, the one – thousands of years old – that unites the world in an immense, interconnected community.”

There are currently no plans for a family album, but Andrea told Express.co.uk last year: “Never say never.”

“For the first time, three Bocellis sang on stage together with their own voices: Virginia and Matteo, alongside their dad. Family is music in itself, it is the score that restores life’s harmony.

During the concert, Andrea performed Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah alongside 9-year-old Virginia.

Matteo Bocelli teases world tour with new music after latest duet with dad Andrea Bocelli

Earlier this week, Andrea Bocelli became the first person ever to perform in the ancient desert city of Hegra, located in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. In another first, the Italian tenor sang alongside his 9-year-old daughter Virginia Bocelli and also his son Matteo Bocelli in the same concert. The 23-year-old and his 62-year-old father performed their hit duet Fall On Me for a lucky socially distanced audience of just 300, while fans watched a live stream on Andrea’s official YouTube account.
Aside from live performances with his father Andrea Bocelli, Matteo Bocelli’s debut solo work saw him sing The Lion King’s Can You Feel The Love Tonight for 2020 album Disney Goes Classical.

Andrea’s son performed Sir Elton John’s hit accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

This was the second time he’d sung for Disney as his Fall On Me duet with his father featured in the movie The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

Now, over the last year of lockdown, Matteo has been teasing that he’s working on his debut album.

And by the sounds of his most recent update, he’s planning on touring the record in 2022.

Posting a snap himself performing in Hegra this week on Instagram, Matteo wrote: “Sooo good to be back on stage singing after almost a year.

“AlUla has been a blast and I can’t wait to travel the world next year with some new music. Any suggestions?”

This latest tease follows on from one in February when he wrote: “It’s been two years since my debut at the most important music festival in Italy.

At the time, the 23-year-old had tweeted a picture with the British singer, writing: “Such a pleasure to spend some time with the legend Gary Barlow!”

In that summer 2020 fan Q&A, Matteo shared in response: “I worked with Gary Barlow on some music. We created some very good songs and I can’t wait to share it.”

Asked about his upcoming debut album, Andrea’s son said: “We’re composing a lot of songs that we hope to share with you very soon.

“I’m writing a lot of new music. It’s a little bit of a surprise I can tell you that.”

He also shared how he’s been working on the debut record since mid-2019 and cannot wait for it to release in 2021.

The rising star added: “We created many songs. You’re going to have to wait a little bit. There’s going to be some surprises.”

Here’s hoping that at least both Andrea and Gary Barlow feature on the album too.

Plus Matteo’s father has worked with Ed Sheeran on Perfect Symphony in the past, so who knows if he can be convinced to contribute as well?

Taylor Swift Shares Rare, Recent Photos With Mom Andrea In Lyric Video for ‘The Best Day’ Re-Record

The re-record of Taylor Swift’s 2008 album, ‘Fearless’, is here. This means a brand new version and video of ‘The Best Day’ hs arrived, along with sweet new photos of Taylor with her mom.

Taylor Swift[1], 31, is not the only person who has grown up since she originally recorded her album Fearless in 2008. Her mom has also been along for the ride over the past 13 years, and so Taylor made sure to pay tribute to Andrea Swift for the release of her re-recorded album, Fearless (Taylor’s Version), on April 9. This means the tribute song she wrote for her mom all those years ago, “The Best Day,” arrived with a brand-new lyric video that revealed photos taken recently.

While the visuals start with a montage of videos and photos from Taylor’s childhood[2], the montage ended with a slideshow of pictures featuring a grown-up Taylor with her beautiful mom. They posed for many smiley selfies together, as you can see in the photos above and below!

As this video demonstrates, Taylor is incredibly close with her mother. This is why it was especially difficult for the Grammy-winning pop star after her mother was first diagnosed with cancer in 2015. By March of 2019, Taylor revealed that the cancer had returned in her interview with Elle[3]; and in Jan. 2020, she revealed that doctors had found a brain tumor[4] in her mother amid treatment.

“Everyone loves their mom; everyone’s got an important mom. But for me, she’s really the guiding force. Almost every decision I make, I talk to her about it first. So obviously, it was a really big deal to ever speak about her illness,” Taylor told Variety[5] after the tumor was found.
Fearless (Taylor’s Version) is the first album that Taylor re-recorded[6] to gain back ownership of her music. When she left Big Machine Records in 2018, she gave up the rights to own the masters of her first six albums, which she originally recorded under that record label. Label head, Scott Borchetta, would not allow Taylor to buy the masters outright — instead, he wanted her to record six NEW albums under Big Machine to earn back each old one. Taylor did not want to take that deal, so she left Big Machine and her masters behind.

However, when Scott then did sell the masters[7] outright — to the singer’s nemesis, Scooter Braun, no less — Taylor decided to take action. As soon as she was allowed to begin re-recording the music[8] in Nov. 2020, she got to work. Fearless, which originally came out in 2008, was the first re-recorded project that she completed. In addition to all the original songs and bonus tracks, Taylor also re-recorded six never-before-heard songs[9] that didn’t make Fearless the first time around. Fans got to hear these “from the vault” tracks for the first time on Fearless (Taylor’s Version).

Taylor has not yet confirmed which of the five remaining albums she plans to re-record next. However, in March, she dropped a snippet of the new version of her song[10] “Wildest Dreams,” which was originally on the 2014 album, 1989. Naturally, this left fans speculating that 1989 will be up next. Meanwhile, Taylor fully owns the rights to the three albums — Lover, Folklore and Evermore — that she recorded since leaving Big Machine.
