Olympic medals dating to 1896, relay torches from several eras, and other Olympic memorabilia are among the items being auctioned just days before the Tokyo Games.
BOSTON — When the first modern Olympics were held in Athens in 1896, winners did not get gold medals as they will later this month when the Tokyo games get underway. Instead, they got silver, while runners-up got bronze. There were no medals for third place.
One of those exceedingly rare first-place silver medals is for sale in an Olympics-themed auction that opens Thursday.
“Interest is high now with the Tokyo Olympics approaching,” RR Auction Executive Vice President Bobby Livingston said.
The 1896 silver medal is expected to sell for about $ 75,000 given its rarity, Livingston said. Unlike today’s behemoth games with thousands of athletes and hundreds of events, the 1896 Olympiad featured about 250 athletes — all men — from a little more than a dozen nations competing in 10 sports.
A bronze medal from the same year is expected to fetch around $ 40,000.
Unfortunately, who won the medals has been lost to time, Livingston said.
Before the U.S.’s Dream Team of NBA stars dominated the 1992 men’s basketball tournament, there was the almost as dominant 1984 team that featured future NBA stars Michael Jordan, Chris Mullin and Patrick Ewing.
That gold-medal winning team led by former Indiana coach Bobby Knight rolled to an 8-0 record, averaged more than 95 points per game and held their foes to an average of about 63 points per game.
One of those gold medals, with the multi-colored ribbon, is expected to sell for about $ 70,000, RR Auction said.
“Anything from the U.S. basketball team — and the 1980 men’s hockey team — always demands a lot of interest,” Livingston said.
The medal was consigned to the auctioneer by a collector who bought it directly from a member of the team, but exactly who that player is remains confidential, Livingston said.
Some of the other items for sale include a gold medal awarded to Swedish wrestler Ivar Johansson in the 1932 summer games in Los Angeles and a silver won by Bill “Rabbit” Thomson as a member of the Canadian hockey team in the 1936 winter games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany.
The torches for sale include those from the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway; the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid; and the 1976 winter games in Innsbruck, Austria.
One of the more unusual items is a 17-foot wooden kayak used by Rolf Peterson of Sweden to win a gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo games. It will set you back about $ 30,000.

The Baku Stock Exchange (BSE) held an auction on the placement of medium-term state bonds of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Finance, Trend reports on July 14 referring to a source in the BSE.
The amount of the bonds was 40 million manat ($ 23.5 million) and the term of maturity – 1,092 days.
During the auction, 14 investors filed 26 bids in the price range from 98.14 manat ($ 57.73) with a yield to maturity (YTM) of 7.2 percent to 100.4 manat ($ 59.06) with a YTM of 6.35 percent.
In accordance with the decision of the finance ministry, the cut-off price of bonds reached 100.296 manat ($ 59) with the YTM of 6.39 percent, and the weighted average price – 100.34 manat or $ 59.02 (6.37 percent).
The total amount of applications at nominal prices amounted to nearly 149.84 million manat ($ 88.14 million) while the volume of placement – 40 million manat ($ 23.5 million).
The maturity date is July 9, 20243.
The auction participants must fulfill their obligations to purchase bonds till July 14, 2021.
A new record has been set for the most valuable game of all time after a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 was sold at auction for over one million pounds.
Retro games have been collected online and sold at different sales events for decades, and it appears things are only going to get more valuable.
This week’s record-breaking news was set by what is being labelled a pristine condition Nintendo 64 title, which sold for $ 1.56 million at auction (£1.12 million).
And what makes this story so compelling is that there are a lot of people who can check their own back catalogue of retro titles or dusty boxes of junk in the loft for something similar.
Super Mario 64 was first released by Nintendo in 1996, becoming the best-selling game on the Nintendo 64 console.
And with over 11 million copies sold, there’s a good chance you could find your own retro titles gathering dust or at car boot sales.
What makes this copy so valuable is the condition, with Super Mario 64 originally sold in cardboard boxes.
It makes finding one in mint condition all that harder, and a grading system exists for working out just how pristine a retro video game is.
As an example, the video game grading company Wata listed the $ 1.56 million-selling copy of Super Mario 64 at a 9.8 A++, which is almost a perfect score.
And the official Super Mario Auction page describes the unique lot number in the highest terms, telling potential bidders:
“Well — we’re a bit speechless on this one. What can we even say that would do this copy the justice it deserves?
“The cultural significance of this title and its importance to the history of video games is paramount, and the condition of this copy is just so breathtaking that we’re really at a loss here.
“If you have had your heart set on obtaining the highest graded copy of the single best-selling video game on the Nintendo 64 — the first 3D adventure of Nintendo’s mascot, Mario — we only have one piece of advice: this is not an opportunity to waste.”
The findings revealed by Many Spins revealed that across Europe, Super Mario 64 ranked as a firm favourite among 15 countries on the continent, including but not limited to Norway and Sweden, which both had an average monthly search volume of 1,600 for the game, followed by Austria (1,300), and Germany (9,900).
Duke Nukem was yet another popular choice among European countries, ranking as the most searched for retro video game in six, including Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
Of those countries, the highest average monthly search volume came from Finland, with residents making 1,000 searches on average each month for the retro title. Bulgaria makes 210 searches per month on average, Slovakia makes 480, and Estonia, Lithuania, and Slovenia each make 140 each.
Sonic 3D Blast, Metal Slug and Devil May Cry also ranked as the favourite retro video games in numerous European countries, showing widespread popularity for the titles right across the region.

On Friday, Blizzard will be taking the WoW Classic Auction House offline as part of the build-up to the launch of the important World of Warcraft Burning Crusade pre-patch.
The good news is that everything will be back online later this month, meaning it won’t be long before normal business has resumed.
But for anyone who is in a hurry, it would be best to finish whatever transactions you’re hoping to complete this week in the coming hours.
From what has been shared by Blizzard, the WoW Classic Auction House will be offline at 6pm BST.
The Auction House is scheduled to return on May 18, following the release of the new WoW Classic TBC pre-patch.
A message from Blizzard explains: “In order to prepare our game service to be ready for both the upgrade to The Burning Crusade Classic and the availability of Classic Era realms on May 18, we will close the Auction Houses on all WoW Classic realms at 10:00 a.m. PDT (1:00 p.m. EDT) on Friday, May 14.
“We expect Auction Houses to become available again when the game service resumes following maintenance on May 18.
“We advise WoW Classic players to refrain from posting new auctions shortly before the closure, as it will not be possible for other players to access the AH thereafter, and deposit fees cannot be refunded.”
As mentioned above, the WoW Classic pre-patch won’t be arriving until May 18, with plenty of changes set to take route.
The pre-expansion will last only a few weeks, with The Burning Crusade set to commence on June 1.
World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade Classic will launch in the Americas, Europe, Taiwan, Korea, and Australia/New Zealand at the same time.
With the pre-patch of the Burning Crusade Classic, all WoW Classic realms will move or progress to the Burning Crusade Classic expansion.

Kinmel Hall’s current state is clear from the images included in the listing, with some parts of the property starting to crumble.
In its present form, it comes complete with a large central staircase, huge formal rooms, a chapel and even a courtyard stable block.
The main building was completed in 1850 by owner Hugh Roberts Hughes, who used profits from a copper mining enterprise on Anglesey to build the lavish property.

The estate’s surrounding gardens were designed by Mr Nesfield’s father, with a Venetian-style in mind to complete the luxurious grounds.
The building has been given Grade I status because of its periodic features and distinctive design, as well as being considered as a historic part of the region.
It is even believed that Queen Victoria visited it in 1870 and presented the property with carved wooden panels to show her royal approval, though these were reportedly stolen in 2013.
Commenting on what is thought to be Wales’ largest country house, one local resident said: “It’s essential that Kinmel Hall’s new owner has the vision, dedication and finances to ensure a prosperous future for this hugely important site as part of the region’s economy and community. This needs to include an appreciation of its architectural, historical and cultural significance.”

Another said: “Like Versailles it should come into public ownership.”
A third added: “The Welsh government should take it and open it to the public.”
Similarly, someone else said: “Open to the public, or affordable housing. Sick of properties running to waste so the developers can knock it down and build luxury flats rather than preserve listed features.”
In February 2021, a campaigning group called The Friends of Kinmel Hall petitioned the Conwy County Borough Council to help protect the building.
Speaking to North Wales Live at the time, Rosie Burton, a spokeswoman for The Friends of Kinmel Hall, said: “We are asking them (the council) to proceed with an Urgent Works Notice, which will at least protect the hall from any further damage and make it secure, and proceed with a compulsory purchase.

“I understand there are a number of potential purchasers so the council would not be at much risk of funding repairs to the damage as they could do a ‘back-to-back’ agreement, which means they compulsorily purchase it and sell it on the same day.”
The building is believed to have been sold to British Virgin Islands registered Acer Properties Ltd for £1.45m in 2011, who are thought to still currently own the estate.
It has been listed on Save Britain’s Heritage ‘buildings at risk’ register for several years, with the charity joining the fight to save it just last month.
The estate is being marketed jointly by Allsop and Carter Jonas and will appear at auction on May 13.

Six-month-old Gavrila Djurdjevic, who lives in the village of Cumic, near to the city of Kragujevac in central Serbia, suffers from spinal muscular atrophy and needs the costly treatment.
His family will be given the proceeds after the armband sold for $ 75,000, although organizers told Tass that the total had reached around $ 12.7 million at one point before the astronomical early top bidders were found not to have the funds.
“We could not believe that some people who do not even know us would take the armband, auction it and help our child,” Gavrilo’s mother, Nevena, told Reuters.

Quick-thinking on-duty firefighter Djordje Vukicevic picked up the fresh piece of memorabilia from the sporting icon, later deciding to donate it to Djurdjevic.
“Ronaldo was agitated,” community-minded Vukicevic recalled. “He threw the armband. It fell right next to me. The entire crew agreed it would go [to help] little Gavrilo.”
Raging Ronaldo discarded the strap after being infuriated by a farcical piece of officiating, when an assistant referee failed to spot that his shot, which would have earned Portugal a late win in Belgrade, had clearly crossed the line.
After Serbia hacked the ball clear, the disbelieving visiting captain raced over to the assistant on the near side to animatedly protest that the goal should have been awarded, receiving a booking from the referee, who Portugal boss Fernando Santos later claimed had apologized to him for the dreadful decision.
Santos’s skipper then left the pitch seconds before the end, still clearly enraged as he chucked the band onto the pitch on his way off in an angry expression of his burning disgust.
