Beyond Dogecoin: The 5 hottest cryptocurrencies on Twitter this month

In the realm of digital assets, Crypto Twitter is a major seat of power. Memecoins and serious large-cap assets alike can see their value rise or fall depending on whether the whimsical Twitter crowd decides to pay attention. 

Huge rallies and dramatic declines often trigger waves of fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) or fear of missing out (FOMO) on the platform, capable of massively amplifying the unfolding price dynamics.

Granted, it would be convenient if increases in Twitter volume always spelled price hikes — yet, as the facts demonstrate, this relationship is way, way more complicated than that.

Tweet volume is one of the ingredients of a proprietary formula powering the VORTECS Score, a machine learning algorithm that compares historic and current market conditions around digital assets to aid crypto traders’ decision-making. The model considers a host of other indicators — including market outlook, price movement, social sentiment and trading activity — to arrive at a score that assesses whether the present conditions are historically bullish, neutral or bearish for a given coin.

This week, we follow five digital assets that made the biggest strides in terms of Twitter activity this month. All five saw their tweet volumes increase by hundreds of percentage points compared with the previous month’s average — but how actionable were these dynamics for traders?

Here’s how the VORTECS Score could give investors a few hints.

Telcoin (TEL): +300% Twitter volume

Between May 2 and 5, as Telcoin (TEL) was bracing for a massive price leap that would take it from below $ 0.01 to above $ 0.05 within 10 days, two considerable spikes in tweets tagging TEL occurred. While the coin would normally get several hundred mentions a day, these two peaks each saw more than 3,000.

Combined with other factors, this pattern was recognized as historically favorable by the VORTECS model, which dished out a very high score of 91 (red circle in the graph). A tremendous price run followed less than a day later. Further tweet volume spikes in May followed price surges rather than preceded them.

Overall, over the last 30 days, Telcoin delivered 189% vs. the U.S. dollar and 345% vs. Bitcoin (BTC).

Polygon (MATIC): +240% Twitter volume

Twitter activity around MATIC and its price action entered a virtuous circle in May, with each leg of the price rally triggering a surge in chatter that, in turn, preceded a further round of the token’s appreciation.

Of course, there was much more to Polygon’s remarkable month, with a slew of positive real-world developments and trading activity spikes, but tweet volume appeared to be an essential feature of each VORTECS Score peak (red circles in the chart).

MATIC’s monthly gains: 125% vs. the U.S. dollar and 248% vs. BTC.

iExec (RLC): +711% Twitter volume

iExec’s RLC token emerged as the biggest winner in terms of added tweet volume in May, yet its price increase was more modest: 60% against the U.S. dollar and 148% against Bitcoin.

In RLC’s case, as the charts illustrate, spikes in tweet volume were largely reactive and merely followed price action. The coin’s VORTECS Score was largely neutral ahead of the rally that started around May 9, suggesting that the combination of market conditions preceding it has not been frequently observed before.

Solana (SOL): +525% Twitter volume

Solana saw its average tweet volume increase more than fourfold compared with the previous month, yet almost all corresponding SOL price gains were wiped out by the end of May: -31.48% against the U.S. dollar and +6.06% against Bitcoin.

Tweet volume largely lagged behind the price movement, with one notable exception: an outsized jump from 5,000 to 20,000 tweets on May 17 that contributed to an 80+ VORTECS Score and came some 36 hours before the coin reached its all-time high near $ 58 (red circles in both charts).

Ethereum Classic (ETC): +321% Twitter volume

While the reasons behind Ethereum Classic (ETC) suddenly surging from $ 40 to $ 160 in the first week of May remain a mystery, we can be fairly certain that an explosion in the volume of Twitter conversation was not one of them: All the added tweets came in response to the price rally.

The VORTECS algorithm hadn’t sensed a historically favorable outlook, either, as the score mostly remained in the neutral zone.

ETC ended the month with +67.36% vs. the U.S. dollar and +158.85% vs. Bitcoin.

An uptick in Twitter activity around a digital asset can mean a variety of things, depending on the configuration of other important market and social indicators. Nintendo Says It's Already “Looking Into” Animations Beyond The Mario Movie

Last September, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa claimed the video game giant already had multiple ‘visual content expansion projects‘ in the works.

At the time, it was thought he was referring to movies and/or possible television series. Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s animated Mario movie is currently scheduled for release in 2022, so what might follow this?

While Furukawa wasn’t willing to go into details, in a recent interview with Fast Company – dating back to the end of last month, he mentioned how Mario’s movie debut could just be the start of what’s to come in the world of animation.

“Animation, in general, is something that we [Nintendo] are looking into, and not just this franchise.”

Continuing Our PC Gaming Journey in 2021 and Beyond

We’ve talked often about our “player-first” approach to gaming over the last few years. In the past, that may have meant different things to different people, especially for those who identified strongly with being a console gamer, a PC gamer, or a mobile gamer. If you were to walk the (virtual) halls at Xbox today, I think you’d find that to us, the idea of the “player” has come to mean someone who plays many kinds of games on many different devices. PC gaming is part of this; “player first” has to apply for PC, as well, and to that end we’ve been making investments across the PC gaming ecosystem to ensure that PC is a key part of how people can play games.  

Building Communities Around Games, Not Devices

A big part of our role as a platform holder and game publisher is to connect players with games no matter where they play. Over the last 18 months we’ve launched games on PC like Age of Empires II and III DE, Gears Tactics, Wasteland 3, Minecraft Dungeons, and Microsoft Flight Simulator, many of which topped the Steam charts at launch. We’re looking forward to delivering more PC content, including Age of Empires IV, later this year. Whether they are new genres for established franchises, the next iteration of a classic favorite or the evolution of a storied PC brand, we’re making games that PC gamers love to play.

We know many of you play across more than just your PC, including on Xbox and mobile. That’s why we’re excited to announce Halo Infinite will support multiplayer cross-play and cross-progression when it releases later this year. That means if you’re playing on PC, you can play with your friends on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It also means that your multiplayer customization and progress will follow you across all platforms.

We have been working closely with the PC community to ensure that Halo Infinite offers a premier PC experience, including highly desired features such as support for ultrawide and super ultrawide screens, triple keybinds, a wide variety of advanced graphics options and more. We want to make sure that Halo is serving the PC community.

We’re also using the cloud to make console gaming accessible on even more PCs. While not meant to replace native PC gaming, Xbox Cloud Gaming allows Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members to play over 100 console games on a wide range of computers, from lower-spec, entry-level machines to older devices that otherwise couldn’t handle games that require more power.

Creating Experiences Tailored to PC Gamers

We believe it’s important that players have a choice in where they purchase games and we want to make accessing content even easier. We know that the PC community uses multiple storefronts, which is why we also brought Sea of Thieves, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Age of Empires I, II, and III: Definitive Edition, and Forza Horizon 4 to Steam.

There are also millions of people opting to use their Xbox Game Pass membership to play. We launched Halo: The Master Chief Collection at the end of 2019 on the PC as part of Xbox Game Pass for PC; since then, over 10 million players have played it, with the vast majority of them being brand new to the franchise. We’re encouraged by the community’s response, and we continue to bring more games from publishers and developers across the industry into the Xbox Game Pass for PC library. We’re only four months into 2021, and we’ve already added 100 titles, including award-winning Bethesda games and brand new PC games, and we partnered with Electronic Arts to make EA Play a part of Xbox Game Pass for PC and Ultimate memberships at no additional cost. More than 50 leading device partners, including Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, MSI and Razer, are offering Xbox Game Pass for PC with qualifying devices, giving gamers around the world access to the library.

Celebrity Cruises’ Beyond: Cabins, dining, entertainment and prices explained

Celebrity Beyond is the third in Celebrity Cruises’ hip and happening Edge Series but it’s a little longer and taller than sister ships Edge and Apex to provide more outdoor space for guests and an extra 179 staterooms and suites. Designer Kelly Hoppen shook up the cruise industry with her sublime interiors for Edge and she’s given Beyond the same treatment, with an additional twist.

Lead architect Tom Wright dubbed the original Edge as simply “a prototype”, which is why Beyond is bigger: longer and taller, with an additional deck.

The stylish Rooftop Garden is bigger with a proper stage for bands and “spoilers” to direct sea breezes away from guests and the adjoining Rooftop Garden Grill is also larger. And the main Resort Deck is also bigger, with unrestricted views out to the port side and two-deck high cabanas on the other side of the deck that create a sophisticated and intimate vibe.

But it’s Gwyneth Paltrow who is the new Wow factor, starting as Wellbeing Advisor for Beyond and “curating”, as she describes it, a programme for all Celebrity’s ships that includes Women in Wellness classes in partnership with goop.

“At goop, our curiosity leads us to explore different approaches to well-being and sends us around the world, reporting on the best places to eat, drink, engage, and unwind,” she said.

“Near the nexus of these interests, we came across Celebrity’s mission to disrupt the traditional notion of being well-traveled. As Celebrity’s new wellbeing advisor, I’ll be working with my team at goop to bring onboard some of our favorite practices and tools for deepening wellbeing and joy.”

THE LIFESTYLE

Beyond is a “sanctuary at sea” with “more space to lose yourself” according to the marketing message. Relaxation is at the heart of the ship’s mission and while guests are not expected to wander into restaurants in ripped jeans and baseball caps, neither do they have to dress up to the nines.

Although the whole ship is beautiful, the Retreat for suite guests is particularly gorgeous and Kelly Hoppen describes the 40 per cent larger Retreat Sundeck as “creating solitude spaces, zen areas, where people can chill”. There’s also a 25-yard lap pool on the top deck, which is not only unusual for a cruise ship but indicates the health-conscious lifestyle promoted by Celebrity Cruises.

STATEROOMS

All the stateroom and suite interior designs have been “refreshed” for Beyond, with bedding and artwork updated, says Kelly Hoppen: “Its more about the textures, colours accessories – it’s tiny details.”

Beyond has 179 additional staterooms and suites compared to Edge and Apex, which both take 2,918 guests. Balcony staterooms on these two earlier ships extend to the water’s edge at the click of a button that hides the glass doors, with sea views from 90 per cent of all the staterooms, so Beyond is likely to have something similar.

As Celebrity Cruises’ president and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said at the first glimpse reveal: “Stay tuned.”

What we do know is that suites will include two-storey villas with private plunge pools.

Luminae at the Retreat is the private restaurant for The Retreat guests, which is found on all Celebrity vessels except its expedition ships, and its menu is also created by Boulud, with interiors by Kelly Hoppen.

For Beyond, Hoppen admitted “I’ve let myself go wild in that space” to create different nooks and places within Luminae.

“I wanted people to be in that restaurant and feel that they needed to book it for the next night so they could be over here, or there,” she explained.

Bars mentioned included the Martini Bar in the Grand Plaza, in the heart of the ship, and both the lounge and the bar will be bigger than on the Edge and Apex. Similarly, the specialty restaurant Rooftop Garden Grill will be bigger and the Sunset Bar at the back of the ship will be multi-terraced, making it 180 per cent larger.

FACT BOX

Celebrity Beyond will make its maiden voyage in April 2022, sailing from Southampton before home-porting in Europe for Mediterranean and Greek island cruises.

In October 2022 Beyond will switch to Fort Lauderdale for Caribbean cruises over late autumn and winter into spring 2023.

The inaugural voyage leaves Southampton on April 27, 2022, for a 10-night Western Europe cruise to Barcelona, calling at La Rochelle, Bilbao, Lisbon, Cadiz, Malaga and Mallorca. Prices start from £1,889pp, two sharing (celebritycruises.com).
