Weight loss is not easy to achieve with many diet plans offering results. Dr Michael Mosley listed a number of common foods dieters should try to avoid if hoping to burn fat.

Avoid snacking

The expert recommended getting food from substantial meals rather than eating throughout the day.

Snacking on sugary treats can stop fat burning, Dr Mosley explained.

He said: “Grazing keeps sugars up and stops fat burning.

“But if you must, eat a small handful of nuts or a small piece of cheese.”

Slimmers should look out for foods high in sugar, including those with hidden sugars.

The expert continued: “Completely cut back on cakes, sweets, biscuits, crisps, fruit juices and soft drinks.

“These foods rapidly turn into sugar in your blood causing sugar spikes and weight gain – they are like the tip of the iceberg.

“Avoid most breakfast cereals. These are usually packed full of sugar,” he added.

“Oats are fine, as long as they are not the flavoured or instant sort.

“Also, avoid too many sweet tropical fruits including mango, pineapple, grapes, melon and bananas, as these are full of sugar.

“Instead, opt for berries, apples and pears. Try to have a maximum of two pieces of fruit a day and always eat the skin.”

White flour

White flour is highly inflammatory and contains no nutrients because it has been refined and stripped of the outermost and innermost layers of grain, removing most of the fibre, nutrients, and even proteins.

That means that it will be digested rapidly, creating a cascading effect of increased insulin levels, increased fat storage, and an increased waistline.

In addition, the low fibre content of white flour won’t leave one feeling very satisfied, which can often lead to eating more calories than you really need thereby increasing belly fat.

Dr Sheila Dugan, a physician and rehabilitation specialist said: “One good place to begin improving your food choices is to eliminate sugary drinks – and not just soda, but juices.

“Sugar increases belly fat and fibre reduces belly fat; thus, when you’re juicing fruits, you’re removing the fibre, leaving pure sugar.

“So, one quick fix, a very concrete fix, would be eliminating sugary drinks.

“Replacing sugary beverages with water will help dramatically cut down your sugar intake, and then once you’ve taken that step, you can figure out how to cut down on foods that are high in sugar.

“If you have a sweet tooth and need to put that final accent to your meal, eat an apple, melon or fresh berries. Just remember, fruit is not a substitute for vegetables.”

How to lose visceral fat: The best type of cooking oil to burn harmful belly fat

What’s more, the group that ate the coconut oil showed increased HDL “good” cholesterol levels, while the soybean oil group had decreased HDL cholesterol and increased LDL “bad” cholesterol.

What are HDL and LDL cholesterol?

Cholesterol – a waxy substance found naturally in the body – comes in two forms: HDL or LDL.

LDL cholesterol is branded the “bad” cholesterol because it collects on the inside of your artery walls, thereby raising your risk of heart disease.

HDL cholesterol, on the other hand, counters this harmful mechanism by picking up LDL cholesterol and transporting it to the liver where it is flushed out.

Other key dietary tips to reduce visceral fat

If you want to reduce your belly fat, you’ll need to burn more calories (energy) than you consume, and eat the right kinds of food.

Bupa says the following can help you to achieve this:

  • Make sure you eat a balanced diet. Try to eat at least five portions of fruit and veg each day, and include higher-fibre starchy foods in meals
  • Have some reduced-fat dairy or soya drinks fortified in calcium
  • Eat more beans, pulses, fish and eggs
  • Eat small amounts of unsaturated oil
  • Drink six to eight glasses of water each day
  • Avoid adding salt or sugar to your meals.

The health body also says to cut out sports drinks, sugar sweetened drinks and other foods that have a lot of added sugar in them.

“Be aware that low-fat options might have high amounts of added sugar in them.”

One of the most important food groups to eat is soluble fibre.

“This is because soluble fibre absorbs water and forms a gel that helps slow down food as it passes through your digestive system,” explains Holland and Barrett.

“It helps you feel fuller for longer, so you end up eating less and not snacking excessively.”

Examples of soluble fibre include flax seeds, avocados, blackberries, and Brussels sprouts.

In addition to eating well, exercise is integral to visceral fat loss.

Studies have shown that you can help trim visceral fat or prevent its growth with both aerobic activity (such as brisk walking) and strength training (exercising with weights).

According to Harvard Health, spot exercises, such as sit-ups, can tighten abdominal muscles but won’t get at visceral fat.

“Exercise can also help keep fat from coming back,” adds the health body.

Normally, the body gets its energy from the calories in carbohydrates, fats and proteins, which are slowly digested and absorbed within the gastrointestinal system.

However, this digestive process changes when alcohol is there.

When a person drinks alcohol, it gets immediate attention as it recognises alcohol as a toxin and needs no digestion.

The liver then burns the alcohol rather than the fat and this increases fat around the belly.

Not only does alcohol delay the liver’s ability to break down fat, but it also obstructs the body’s access to the hormones it needs to help break down fat effectively.

When the body is focused on processing alcohol, it is not able to properly break down foods containing carbohydrates and fat.

Therefore, these calories are converted into body fat and are carried away for permanent storage on your body.

In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, alcohol and how it affects a person’s fat adiposity was investigated.

The study noted: “Our study examined whether various drinking patterns differentially affect fat distribution, particularly abdominal fat in women and men.

“These results support the hypothesis that drinking pattern affects the distribution of body fat, an important CHD risk factor.”

If you want to try cutting down on the amount you are drink, then here are five practical tips from The British Dietetic Association:

  • Replace high calorie mixer for a lower calorie one e.g low calorie tonic or diet cola and alternate drinks with water/diet/low calorie drinks
  • Don’t top up the glass before it’s finished so the volume consumed can be monitored more accurately
  • Let your friends and family know you are trying to cut down so they can support you
  • Avoid salty snacks such as crisps and salted nuts because these make you thirstier (as well as being high in fat and salt)
  • Think about the strength of your drink – choose beers or lagers that contain less alcohol

A demonstration outside Old Trafford protesting Man Utd’s ownership by the US-based Glazer family in the wake of the ill-fated Super League plans has led to at least one United States flag being burned outside the famous stadium.

Man Utd were among the so-called ‘dirty dozen’ of European clubs who were signatories to the hugely unpopular Super League plans when it was initially announced last weekend but today, with the those plans now lying in ashes, a section of angry Red Devils fans took out their fury at the club’s ownership – by settling alight the Stars and Stripes.

More than a thousand fans gathered outside the home the 20-time English champions to have their voices heard not just about the Super League plans, which prompted a tail-between-their-legs concession by the club’s bosses, but also the Glazer’s longstanding ownership of the team which has hit new heights of unpopularity in the past few days.

Fans could be heard chanting “Glazers out” at the demonstration, while also wearing scarves emblazoned with a similar message. Smoke bombs were also said to have been set off during the protests on Saturday afternoon.

Footage making its way to social media also appeared to show fans burning an American flag outside the stadium in the starkest signal to the club’s ownership yet that they have lost any remaining support amongst the fanbase that they may have previously enjoyed.

All of the consequences of the debt-ridden Glazer ownership of the club have come home to roost in the last week, with the disgraceful plans to walk away from our roots in English football and walk away from our history and tradition in the European Cup,” read a statement distributed by the organizers of the demonstration.

The disgraceful plan was a direct consequence of an ownership structure which is all about money and nothing about supporters.

United fans demand change. We demand the German model requiring fans own 50% +1 of the club. We demand that the Glazers begin the process to make this happen with immediate effect.

The last week has shown them the future they dreamed of for Manchester United is not possible and is never going to happen. There will never be a better time to hand majority ownership to the only people who have the long-term interests of the club at heart – the United fans.

We call on all United fans to come together on the forecourt at 2pm, before the Liverpool game, to collectively make this point in a way the Glazers, and the rest of the world, cannot ignore.”

However, the protests – and in particular the flag-burning element – wasn’t met with unanimous consent from fans online.

This perhaps is getting out of control,” said one supporter. “Burning a national flag can be serious.”

Another described the act as “trashy behavior“, adding that “regular Americans have nothing to do with the Glazer family.”

Whatever the reaction, it is clear that the fanbase of the most traditionally successful club in English football has rarely been quite as vocal in their dissatisfaction with the direction the club’s owners are taking them – and one wonders if, sooner or later, the furious fans will get their wish.

They claimed getting steps in in the morning could be the best time to reap the benefits.

Dr Mosley said: “There are loads of benefits for going for a walk at any time of day or night, but getting out and about in the morning really could have some added benefits.

“It’s also a good idea to make your walk as brisk as possible because when you do that it increases the impact by about 50 percent.”

Marie stated: “The evidence is mixed. If you walk fasted… there’s a little bit of evidence to suggest it might be better for weight loss.

“For me, you’ve already come off of a night of fasting before breakfast and it’s probably better to put something into your system to get your going.”

Marie suggested going for a fasted walk could potentially speed up weight loss.

“On the day where I didn’t, you could absolutely see the fat in my blood.

“Whereas when I had been for a brisk walk, it turned on the muscles, if you like, and they started to draw the fat and the sugar out of my blood.

“Simply on that basis it seemed like quite a good idea to have a brisk walk after breakfast.”

Marie agreed, and added: “I think the message that comes out of that is any walking, whenever you do it, is good.”
